Head to head scenarios

Breaking news and what people are saying

Winner: Grok. Live search over X posts is unique to it. Gemini finds news through Google search but not live X reaction.

Short videos for social media

Winner: Gemini on price. Video starts at $4.99 on AI Plus, against $30 for Grok Premium. If you also want X perks, Grok's bundle is reasonable, but Gemini is the cheaper video tool.

Everyday assistant on an Android phone

Winner: Gemini. It is built into Android and Chrome and works with Gmail and Docs. Grok is a separate app.

Long documents

Winner: Gemini. Google lists 1M tokens of context on AI Pro, twice Grok 4.7's stated 500K on the API.

Developers who want API access

Winner: Grok. Paid plans include Grok API access, and usage is shared with Cursor. Gemini's coding agent, Jules, is included on AI Pro, but API usage is billed separately.

Privacy

Google's Gemini privacy hub states that with Keep Activity on, chats are saved and used to train models, auto deleting after 18 months by default, with a subset reviewed by human reviewers after being disconnected from your account. With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used for training and are kept for 72 hours.

Grok Teams lists SSO and admin controls. xAI's privacy policy page was not reachable when we compared plans in October 2026, so read it before using Grok for anything sensitive, and note that consumer plans tie into your X account.

On the App Store, Grok rates 4.9 from about 1.5 million ratings and Gemini 4.7 from about 2.4 million. On G2, Gemini has 4.4 from 635 reviews against Grok's 4.1 from 58.

Verdict

Gemini gives more for less: cheaper tiers, a much fuller free plan, video from $4.99, Google app integration and lots of storage. Grok is the pick for people who want live X coverage and API access bundled with chat. Unless X is central to how you follow the world, start with Gemini.
