Notion AI is the best AI assistant for teams that already run their docs, wikis and projects in Notion. On Business at $20 per seat per month billed annually ($24 monthly) you get Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search and research mode, with no training on your data. The catch: Free and Plus only get a trial, and Custom Agents bill credits on top.

By Notion Labs

Notion AI is the best assistant for teams whose docs, wikis and projects already live in Notion, because it works on that content with your permissions and no training on your data by default. You need the Business plan at $20 per seat per month billed annually ($24 monthly) for the full suite, and Custom Agents bill credits on top.

What it is

Notion AI is the set of AI features built into Notion, the workspace app for docs, wikis, databases and projects. It is not a separate app. Because it sits inside your workspace, it works with your pages and databases and respects the permissions people already have, so it cannot read content you cannot.

In 2026 the product centers on agents:

  • Notion Agent, a personal assistant that completes multi step tasks using context from Notion, connected apps and the web.
  • Custom Agents, team agents that run recurring work on a schedule or a trigger.
  • AI Meeting Notes, which transcribes and summarizes meetings into pages.
  • Enterprise Search, which searches Notion plus connected tools like Slack, Google Drive and GitHub (beta).
  • Research mode, for longer reports.
  • AI blocks, inline writing help in pages.

Pricing explained

Plan Monthly billing Annual billing Notion AI
Free $0 $0 Limited trial
Plus $12 per seat $10 per seat Limited trial
Business $24 per seat $20 per seat Full Notion AI with usage allowance
Enterprise Contact sales Contact sales Full AI, zero data retention with most models
Notion credits $10 per 1,000 credits per month Custom Agents, premium models, overage

Business is the real price of Notion AI. It is double Plus. For a 10 person team on annual billing that is $2,400 per year on Business against $1,200 on Plus, so the AI costs about $1,200 per year, or $10 per person per month.

Credits are the hidden cost. Business includes a usage allowance for certain AI features. Beyond it, Notion may pause usage temporarily unless you buy credits. Custom Agents always need credits after a free trial period, and premium models cost credits because, in Notion's words, they cost much more to run. Notion says it charges model tokens at providers' published rates without markup.

Worked example. A 25 seat team on annual Business pays $6,000 per year. If it runs a handful of Custom Agents that use 3,000 credits a month, add $30 per month, or $360 per year. Total: $6,360.

How it compares. ChatGPT Business is $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually, and Claude Team is the same, but those are standalone assistants. Notion Business includes the workspace itself. See ChatGPT pricing, Claude pricing and the AI Price Index.

Key features

Notion Agent

The agent takes a request like "build a launch plan from last quarter's retro and assign owners" and works through it using your pages, databases and connected apps. Notion says it completes complex, multi step tasks inside the workspace, which is where it beats a general chatbot that only drafts text.

Custom Agents

Custom Agents handle recurring work on schedules or triggers, such as triaging a request database every morning or compiling a weekly status page. Notion made them free to try through May 3, 2026, and they now run on credits.

AI Meeting Notes

Meeting notes transcribe and summarize calls into your workspace, so action items land next to the project they belong to. This removes the need for a separate meeting assistant for many teams. Compare with dedicated tools in our AI meeting assistants hub.

Enterprise Search

On Business, search covers Notion plus connected tools including Slack, Google Drive and GitHub, labeled beta. It answers questions across those sources with your permissions.

Research mode and AI blocks

Research mode produces longer reports on a topic. AI blocks give inline drafting and editing inside any page, and database autofill fills properties across rows.

Model choice

Notion calls itself model agnostic and lets admins switch workflows between providers without losing context. Premium models must be enabled by workspace admins and use credits.

What users say

  • App Store: 4.8 from about 90,000 ratings for the Notion app overall.
  • Trustpilot: 2.2 from 439 reviews, 113 in the last year.

Praise centers on flexibility, clean design and syncing across devices. Complaints focus on billing after trials, slow support by email, performance when workspaces get large, and AI specifically: one reviewer objected to business data going to OpenAI, and others dislike paying for credits on top of a paid plan. These reviews cover Notion as a whole.

Privacy and security

Notion publishes clear AI terms:

  • No training by default. Notion states that neither Notion nor its AI providers use customer data to train models.
  • Retention. Free, Plus and Business data sent to AI providers is retained up to 30 days. Enterprise gets zero data retention with most models.
  • Permissions. AI only sees what the user can already see.
  • Certifications. SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001, with zero retention APIs that support HIPAA compliant workflows.
  • Encryption and deletion. TLS 1.2 or higher in transit; deleted pages are restorable for 30 days and embeddings are purged within 60 days.
  • Providers. Notion lists its AI subprocessors on a separate page. Workspace owners can control whether workspace data is shared with Notion to improve Notion AI.

This is a stronger written policy than most consumer assistants, and the reason Notion AI is a safe pick for teams with sensitive internal docs.

Who it is for

  • Teams that live in Notion for docs, wikis, tasks and projects.
  • Meeting heavy teams that want notes in the same place as the work.
  • Ops leads who want agents to run recurring workspace chores.
  • Companies with security reviews that need SOC 2, ISO 27001 and a no training policy.

Who should skip it

  • Solo users on Free or Plus who only want occasional AI help. A free ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude plan does more for $0.
  • Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 shops. Gemini or Microsoft Copilot work inside the apps you already use.
  • People who want voice chat or image generation. Notion AI has neither.
  • Budget teams unwilling to double their per seat cost.

Alternatives

  • ChatGPT: broader assistant with connectors, Business at $20 per seat annual.
  • Claude: strong long document writing, Team at $20 per seat annual.
  • Gemini: built into Google Workspace.
  • Microsoft Copilot: built into Microsoft 365.

Verdict

For a team already in Notion, Business with Notion AI is worth it: the agent works on your real content with your permissions, meeting notes and search remove separate tools, and the security terms are clear. Budget for credits if you plan to run Custom Agents. If Notion is not already your system of record, a standalone assistant is cheaper and more capable.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Notion AI?

Notion AI is included in full on the Business plan at $24 per seat per month billed monthly or $20 per seat billed annually, and on Enterprise, which is contact sales. Free and Plus include a limited trial only. Custom Agents and premium models use Notion credits at $10 per 1,000 credits per month.

Is Notion AI free?

Only as a limited trial. Free and Plus workspaces get a limited trial of Notion Agent, meeting notes and research mode through complimentary AI responses. For ongoing use you need Business or Enterprise.

Can I still buy the Notion AI add-on?

Notion's pricing page now shows AI bundled into Business and Enterprise and does not list a separate AI add on for Plus. Existing add on customers should check their billing settings.

What are Notion credits?

Credits pay for Custom Agents, premium models and usage beyond the AI allowance on Business and Enterprise. They cost $10 per 1,000 credits per month. Notion says it charges model tokens at each provider's published rate with no markup.

Does Notion AI train on my data?

No. Notion states that by default neither Notion nor its AI providers use customer data to train models. Free, Plus and Business data sent to AI providers is retained up to 30 days; Enterprise gets zero data retention with most models.

Which AI models does Notion use?

Notion describes itself as model agnostic and uses models from several providers, some directly and some through inference platforms. It keeps the current list on its subprocessor page rather than its pricing page.

Is Notion AI worth it?

Yes if your team already keeps docs, wikis and projects in Notion, because the agent works on that content with your permissions. If your work lives in Google Docs or Microsoft 365, Gemini or Copilot inside those apps is a better fit.

Does Notion AI do meeting notes?

Yes. AI Meeting Notes on Business transcribes and summarizes meetings into your workspace. Free and Plus get a limited trial.
