Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Sora is gone: OpenAI closed the app on April 26, 2026 and the Sora 2 API on September 24, 2026. The best replacement is Google Veo 3.1, which generates video with native audio like Sora 2, reaches 4K and starts free with 50 Flow credits a day. Runway is the pick for editing, and Kling for long clips.
Our top picks
What happened to Sora
OpenAI launched Sora 2 and the Sora app in late 2025, with synced audio and cameos that let people put verified likenesses of themselves into videos. On March 24, 2026 OpenAI announced the end of Sora. The app shut down on April 26, 2026, and the Videos API with sora-2 and sora-2-pro shut down on September 24, 2026, with no one to one replacement listed. The last published API prices were $0.10 per second for sora-2 and $0.30 to $0.70 per second for sora-2-pro.
That leaves three groups looking for a new tool: social creators who used the app, ChatGPT users who made quick clips, and developers who built on the API. The picks below cover all three. Full background is in our Sora review.
Our picks, in detail
- Starting price
- $4.99 per month
- Max length
- 8 seconds per Veo 3.1 generation, longer with scene extension
- Max resolution
- 4K (API, and 4K upscale on Ultra in Flow)
- Commercial use
- Google does not claim ownership of outputs; Prohibited Use Policy applies
Veo 3.1 is the closest match to what Sora 2 did best: video with native dialogue, effects and ambience in every clip, now up to 4K. You can start free with 50 Flow credits a day, and Google AI Plus is $4.99. For developers moving off the Sora API, Veo 3.1 Fast costs $0.10 per second at 720p against sora-2's last listed $0.10.
Pros
- Native audio (dialogue, effects, ambience) in every Veo 3.1 clip
- Cheapest entry in the category: 50 free Flow credits a day and Plus at $4.99
- API pricing from $0.05 per second (Lite 720p) to $0.60 (Standard 4K), charged only for successful videos
- Every video carries a SynthID watermark that Gemini and the SynthID Detector can check
Cons
- 8 second clips per generation; longer scenes need extension or editing
- Quality clips cost 100 credits, so Pro's 1,000 monthly credits buy only 10
- The Gemini app now defaults to Gemini Omni Flash for video, so Veo 3.1 is mainly a Flow and API product
- Avatars and video editing in Flow are unavailable in the EEA, UK and Switzerland
Skip it if you need single clips longer than 8 seconds without extending.
- Starting price
- $10 per month
- Max length
- 15 seconds per generation, extendable to 3 minutes
- Max resolution
- 4K
- Commercial use
- Terms bar commercial use of outputs without Kling's written permission and require Kling branding
Kling generates up to 15 seconds per clip in 1080p or 4K and can extend to 3 minutes, longer than Sora ever offered in its app. Plans start at $10 a month in the App Store, and credit packs start at $1.49.
Pros
- Up to 15 seconds per generation in 1080p or 4K, extendable to 3 minutes, per its App Store listing

- 4.7 on the App Store from 31,712 ratings
- Canvas workspace, MCP and CLI for batch generation

- Terms grant Kling a license to use your content and to train its models unless you email to revoke
- Trustpilot 1.2 from 415 reviews, mostly failed generations eating credits and billing
- Prompts on politically sensitive topics are blocked, per TechCrunch
Skip it if for commercial work: its terms bar commercial use without Kling's written permission.
- Starting price
- $15 per month
- Max length
- Gen-4.5 clips 2 to 10 seconds; Aleph 2.0 edits clips up to 30 seconds
- Max resolution
- 720p Gen-4.5 output, 4K upscaling on paid plans
- Commercial use
- Allowed on all plans; Runway claims no ownership of outputs
Runway pairs Gen-4.5 generation with Aleph 2.0, which edits up to 30 seconds of real footage, plus 4K upscaling and C2PA credentials. Commercial use is allowed on every plan and the API costs $0.01 per credit, a direct landing spot for Sora API users.
Pros
- Aleph 2.0 edits up to 30 seconds of existing 1080p footage and changes only what you ask, which few rivals offer
- Gen-4.5 ranked first on the Artificial Analysis text to video leaderboard at launch (1,247 Elo, December 2025)
- One credit wallet covers Runway models plus Kling, Seedance, Veo and Wan, in the app and the API
- C2PA content credentials on outputs and a public C2PA verifier
- Team plan pools credits; Enterprise adds SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, SSO and indemnification
Cons
- 625 Standard credits buy about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5, so the entry plan runs out fast
- Terms let Runway train on your inputs and outputs unless you are on Enterprise
- Trustpilot score is 1.2 from 366 reviews, driven by credit burn, failed renders and refund complaints
- Named defendant in Andersen v. Stability AI and in YouTube scraping class actions that are still pending
Skip it if you want audio generated with the video or a cheap entry plan; Standard's 625 credits cover about 52 seconds.
- Starting price
- $30 per month
- Max length
- Ray3.2 5 or 10 seconds per generation; video to video up to 20 seconds
- Max resolution
- 1080p with native HDR and 16 bit EXR; 4K via upscaling and third party models
- Commercial use
- All paid plans, only for output made during an active subscription
Luma's Ray3.2 generates native HDR and exports 16 bit EXR, and its API bills a flat $1.20 per 5 second 1080p clip with no minimum. Commercial use is included on every paid plan from $30.
Pros
- Plus credits cost $0.003 each, so a 5 second 1080p Ray3.2 clip is about $1.20 on the cheapest plan

- Multi keyframe control with up to 16 keyframes in one clip and video to video up to 20 seconds

- Max resolution
- 1080p on Pika 2.5
- Commercial use
- Creator plan ($35) and above
Sora's app was a social feed of short, playful videos. Pika is the closest consumer app in spirit, with effects, Pika 2.5 at 1080p, no watermark and third party models on one balance from $10 a month.
Pros
- Every plan works out to the same $0.0111 per credit, so upgrading only buys volume and features
- Pika 2.5 renders 1080p from text, a photo, or 2 to 5 keyframes
- No watermark on any plan, including Free
- Third party models (Seedance 2.5, Wan 3.0, MiniMax H3, Nano Banana 2) on the same balance

CapCut is free to edit, and Pro at $19.99 adds 1,200 AI credits and Seedance video generation, about 240 seconds of 720p Seedance 2.0 Mini a month. It is the easiest way to generate, cut and caption a short clip in one app.

Skip it if you are uneasy with its broad content license or need assets cleared for commercial use by default.
How to choose
If you used Sora for clips with sound, go to Veo. It is the only major model that generates dialogue, effects and ambience in every clip by default.
If you used the Sora API, compare per second costs. Veo 3.1 Fast is $0.10 per second at 720p and $0.12 at 1080p with audio; Lite starts at $0.05. Runway Gen-4.5 is $0.12 per second. Luma Ray3.2 is $1.20 per 5 second 1080p clip. All three bill only per output, with no seat fees.
If you used the Sora app for fun, Pika and CapCut are the closest consumer experiences, and Grok bundles video inside a chat assistant.
If you need longer shots, Kling makes up to 15 seconds per generation, but read its commercial use terms first.
If you need commercial rights, Veo (Google claims no ownership), Runway (every plan) and Luma (every paid plan) are clear. Pika needs Creator at $35. Kling requires written permission.

Features Sora users will miss
Cameos. Sora let people record themselves, approve who could use their likeness and revoke it at any time. No video generator in this list copies that model. If you want your own face in AI video, use an avatar tool like HeyGen or Synthesia, both of which require consent from the person being recreated.
Visible watermark plus C2PA. Every Sora output carried a visible watermark and C2PA metadata. Veo embeds an invisible SynthID watermark, and Runway attaches C2PA content credentials. Pika adds no watermark at all.
A built in social feed. None of the alternatives replicates Sora's feed. Most creators now generate in one tool and post to TikTok, Reels or Shorts.
Red flags when switching
- Commercial terms. Read the license before you move client work. Kling bars commercial use without permission, Pika requires Creator, and CapCut's rights depend on which assets you use.
- Training on your uploads. Runway and Luma can train on your content outside Enterprise, and Kling grants itself a license unless you email to revoke.
- Credits on failed renders. Runway, Pika, Kling and Luma all have Trustpilot complaints about credits spent on unusable output. Test on monthly billing first.
- Likeness rules. Animating a real person without consent breaks every vendor's terms on this list.
How we picked
We started from the jobs Sora did (audio video from text, short social clips, an API for developers) and compared current tools on published facts only: pricing pages, terms, API docs and ratings, as listed in October 2026. Ranking weighs closeness to Sora's capabilities, value, commercial clarity and trust. Scores follow our method. For the wider field, see the best AI video generators.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sora shut down?
Yes. OpenAI announced the end of Sora on March 24, 2026. The Sora app shut down on April 26, 2026, and the Videos API with sora-2 and sora-2-pro shut down on September 24, 2026, according to OpenAI's deprecations page. OpenAI lists no one to one replacement.
What is the best alternative to Sora?
Google Veo 3.1. It generates video with native audio like Sora 2 did, reaches 4K, has a free daily allowance in Flow and an API priced from $0.05 per second. Runway is the best pick for editing and professional pipelines, and Kling for long clips.
What should Sora API users switch to?
Veo 3.1 through the Gemini API or Vertex AI is the closest swap, at $0.10 to $0.60 per second with audio. Runway's API at $0.01 per credit (Gen-4.5 $0.12 per second) and Luma's per video API ($1.20 per 5 second 1080p clip) are the other main options.
Is there a free Sora alternative?
Veo in Google Flow gives everyone 50 credits a day, enough for about 5 Veo 3.1 Lite clips. CapCut's editor is free, and Runway's Free plan has 125 one time credits.
Which Sora alternative has cameos or likeness features?
None works exactly like Sora's cameos. For your own likeness in video, AI avatar tools such as HeyGen and Synthesia build a digital twin from a short recording with consent checks. See the best AI avatar generators.
Can I still download my Sora videos?
The Sora app closed on April 26, 2026. Check OpenAI's help center for any export options that were offered before shutdown; we found no way to access the app after that date.
