Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Suno is the best AI song generator for most people. Pro costs $8 a month for about 500 songs on the v6 models, with commercial rights and ownership on songs you download. Two catches: downloads are capped at 20 a month on Pro (60 on Premier) since September 3, 2026, and Universal and Sony are still suing over how its earlier models were trained.

What it is
Suno writes and performs complete songs, vocals included, from a text prompt or your own lyrics. Pick a style or describe one, add lyrics or let Suno write them, and it returns two takes per generation. You can extend songs, swap sections, upload your own audio to cover or extend, record your voice, and on paid plans build custom models.
Premier adds Suno Studio, a browser based workstation with stems, MIDI, effects, automation and design your own plugins. Suno has iOS and Android apps, and tracks made on its licensed models can go to streaming platforms through TuneCore and Believe.
Pricing explained
Suno sells credits. A generation costs 10 credits and returns 2 songs, according to Suno's help center for v6.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | Credits | Approx songs | Downloads a month | Commercial use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 50 a day | About 10 a day | None | No |
| Pro | $8 | $6.40 per month | 2,500 a month | About 500 | 20 | Yes |
| Premier | $24 | $19.20 per month | 10,000 a month | About 2,000 | 60, plus unlimited Studio exports | Yes |
Free runs on v6-mini in a shared queue, uploads up to 8 minutes of audio and has no stem separation.
Pro unlocks v6 and v6-wild, a priority queue with up to 10 songs at once, 2 stem separation types, custom models and voice recording.
Premier adds Suno Studio with MIDI, effects, automation and plugins, 30 minute uploads, 3 stem types and advanced vocal and instrumental tools.
Subscription credits do not roll over. Paid users can buy extra credits and downloads, but Suno shows those prices only in the app.
The download math
The headline "500 songs for $8" is now about generation, not keepers. If you generate 500 songs on Pro and like 30 of them, you can download 20 that month. At $8 for 20 downloads, each kept song costs $0.40 in subscription. Premier's 60 downloads at $24 is the same $0.40 each, but Studio exports on Premier are not capped, so producers who finish tracks inside Studio get far more out per dollar. See Suno pricing for worked examples.
Key features
v6 models
Suno launched v6 on September 9, 2026 in partnership with Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe, according to Music Business Worldwide. The models were built with licensed data and revenue is shared with those partners. v6-wild is a looser, more experimental variant on paid plans.
Lyrics and structure control
Write your own lyrics with section tags, or let Suno write them. Replace a section, extend from a timestamp, or regenerate one part without starting over.
Custom models and your voice
Pro and Premier users can create custom models and record their own voice for Suno to sing with.
Stems
Split a song into vocals and instruments (2 types on Pro, 3 on Premier) to remix in another app.
Suno Studio
Premier's workstation adds MIDI, effects, automation and plugins. It is the closest Suno gets to a real DAW and the reason producers pay $24.
Commercial rights and licensing
Ownership. Suno's terms (effective September 3, 2026) assign ownership of output to paid subscribers. Free users do not own their songs and cannot use them commercially, and songs made on Free stay non commercial after you upgrade.
Downloads gate release. You can only release a song commercially after spending one of your monthly downloads on it.
Watermarks. Music Business Worldwide reported that Suno's licensing deals came with download caps and audio watermarks.
The lawsuits. This is the biggest risk with Suno:
- UMG Recordings v. Suno (US District Court, District of Massachusetts, case 1:24-cv-11611) was filed in June 2024 by labels coordinated through the RIAA, alleging Suno trained on copyrighted recordings without a license.
- Warner Music Group settled with Suno in late 2025 and became a licensing partner, which led to the v6 models.
- Universal and Sony sued Suno a second time in September 2026, arguing the v6 models are "the fruit of the same poisoned tree," per Music Business Worldwide.
- GEMA, the German collecting society, won in Munich on July 31, 2026, when the court ruled Suno infringed copyright.
- Italy opened an investigation into Suno's terms of service in October 2026, per Music Business Worldwide.
None of these cases ended paid users' rights to their downloaded songs as of October 2026, but if you plan to build a business on Suno output, follow the Boston docket and keep records of what you generated and when.
What users say
| Site | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 1.7 | 192 |
| App Store | 4.9 | 375,625 |
The gap is striking. App users rate Suno 4.9 for how fun and creative it is. Trustpilot is 73% one star, and the complaints repeat: no human support and repetitive AI replies, billing and cancellation problems, the 20 download cap that makes credits feel unusable, newer models that some say sound repetitive, and users' own original songs flagged as copyrighted.
Privacy and security
Suno's terms let it use your inputs and outputs to operate and improve its service. It does not publish SOC 2 or ISO certifications, and there is no enterprise tier with a DPA. Treat lyrics and voice recordings you upload as shared with Suno. If you record your own voice for a custom model, you are giving Suno a voice sample under its terms, so read them first.
Who it is for
- Hobbyists who want to hear their lyrics as a finished song.
- Content creators who need custom background tracks for videos and podcasts.
- Songwriters sketching demos before a studio session.
- Producers who want stems and MIDI from AI ideas via Suno Studio.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who needs dozens of finished tracks a month on $8. The 20 download cap is the real limit.
- Labels, sync agencies and brands with strict legal review. Pending litigation may block approval.
- People who want instrumental stock music only. A royalty free library may be simpler.
- Users who need responsive human support. Reviews say it is hard to reach.
Alternatives
- Udio: strong vocals, but no downloads and Udio owns output. See Suno vs Udio.
- ElevenLabs: Eleven Music runs under a UMG licensing deal with commercial use from $6.
- Descript or CapCut: if you just need music beds inside an editor.

Verdict
Suno is still the AI music tool to beat: the best songs per dollar, real ownership on paid plans and Studio for producers. The September 2026 download caps change the math, so think in kept songs, not generations, and pick Premier if you finish tracks in Studio. Keep an eye on the UMG and Sony case, and do not use Free songs for anything you plan to monetize.

ElevenLabs4.4Frequently asked questions
Is Suno free?
Yes. Suno's Free plan gives 50 credits a day, about 10 songs, on the free models. Free songs have no monthly downloads and no commercial rights. Accounts that joined before September 3, 2026 received up to 7 lifetime trial downloads.
How much does Suno cost?
Pro is $8 per month and Premier is $24 per month. Billed yearly, Pro is $6.40 and Premier $19.20 per month, which the pricing page says saves $24 and $72 a year. Extra credits and downloads can be bought on paid plans, with prices shown only in the app.
Can I use Suno songs commercially?
Yes, on Pro and Premier, for songs you spend a download on. Suno's terms assign ownership of output to paid subscribers. Free plan songs cannot be used commercially, and upgrading later does not make old Free songs commercial.
Why does Suno limit downloads now?
Suno introduced monthly download caps (20 on Pro, 60 on Premier) on September 3, 2026, alongside its v6 models built with licensed data from Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe. Music Business Worldwide reported the caps and watermarks as part of the licensing deals.
Is Suno being sued?
Yes. Universal Music and Sony Music sued Suno in the US District Court in Massachusetts in June 2024 and filed a second suit in September 2026 over the v6 models. Warner Music settled and became a partner in late 2025. In Germany, a Munich court ruled in July 2026 that Suno infringed GEMA's rights.
How long can a Suno song be?
Suno's pricing page lists audio upload limits of 8 minutes on Free and Pro and 30 minutes on Premier. Generated songs can be extended inside Suno to build longer tracks.
What is Suno Studio?
Suno Studio is a browser based audio workstation on Premier with stems, MIDI export, effects, automation and design your own plugins. Studio exports are unlimited on Premier and do not count against the 60 download cap.
Suno or Udio?
Suno, for anyone who wants to keep or release songs. Udio has disabled downloads entirely since October 2025 and its terms say Udio owns all output. See [Suno vs Udio](/suno-vs-udio).
