What each option means in practice
Prime members
You already have it. Every Echo speaker and Echo Show in your house, your Fire TV and the Alexa app get Alexa+ at no extra charge. This is how Amazon expects most people to use it, and it is why Alexa+ is the best value voice assistant on the market for Prime homes.
Free without Prime
TechCrunch reported in February 2026 that non Prime customers can use Alexa+ free on the web and in the mobile app, with usage limits. Amazon does not publish the limits. This tier is fine for trying Alexa+ as a chatbot, planning a trip or managing a shared calendar. It does not put Alexa+ on your Echo devices.
$19.99 per month standalone
The Alexa app lists this as Alexa+ Standard Monthly. It gives full access without Prime. It is priced like ChatGPT Plus at $20 and Google AI Pro at $19.99, but those include image generation, deep research and coding tools that Alexa+ does not have. Pay this only if you specifically want Alexa+ on Echo devices and refuse Prime for other reasons.
Monthly vs annual
Amazon lists no annual Alexa+ plan. If you want annual billing, an annual Prime membership is the only route, and it bundles Alexa+ with shipping, Prime Video and other benefits. Twelve months of standalone Alexa+ cost $239.88.
Hidden costs
- Partner services. Alexa+ can order from Grubhub and Uber Eats, book Uber rides, buy Ticketmaster tickets, hire through Thumbtack and Angi, and fill Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods carts. Each charges its normal prices and fees.
- Hardware. Alexa+ is best on an Echo Show or Echo speaker. Alexa.com and the app work without hardware.
- Smart home subscriptions. Camera history on Ring devices and similar services bill separately from Alexa+.
- Privacy cost. Since March 28, 2025, Echo devices send all voice requests to Amazon's cloud. Not a dollar cost, but part of the price.
Worked examples
A Prime household with three Echo devices. Alexa+ cost: $0. It is the obvious yes.
A non Prime renter who wants an AI chatbot. Use Alexa.com free with limits. If you hit limits, ChatGPT Plus at $20 or Gemini's Google AI Plus at $4.99 buys more chatbot for the money. See ChatGPT pricing.
A non Prime family with two old Echo Dots. $19.99 per month is $239.88 per year for Alexa+ alone. A Prime membership costs less for most people and includes Alexa+, so check Prime first.
A Nest household thinking of switching. Gemini for Home is free on your existing speakers, and Gemini Live costs $10 per month or $100 per year with Google Home Premium Standard. Switching hardware to get Alexa+ only makes sense if you already pay for Prime.
How Alexa+ compares with rivals' prices
| Assistant | Free option | Paid option |
|---|---|---|
| Alexa+ | Free with Prime; free with limits on web and app | $19.99 per month without Prime |
| Siri AI | Free on Apple Intelligence devices, daily limits | No price yet; Apple says a fee is coming for expanded access |
| Gemini for Home | Free voice assistant on Nest devices | Google Home Premium $10 or $20 per month; included with Google AI Pro or Ultra |
| ChatGPT | Free plan with voice chats | Go $8, Plus $20 per month |
| Gemini | Free with Gemini Live | AI Plus $4.99, AI Pro $19.99 per month |
On price, the three home assistants cluster around free. The difference is what triggers the bill: Prime for Alexa+, an Apple device for Siri, and a Premium plan for Gemini Live on Google speakers. See all prices in the AI Price Index.
Is Alexa+ worth the price
For Prime members, the price is zero and the answer is yes. Without Prime, $19.99 per month is hard to justify for Alexa+ alone. Try Alexa.com free first, and read the full Alexa+ review and Alexa+ alternatives before paying.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Alexa+?
Alexa+ is free for Amazon Prime members. Without Prime it costs $19.99 per month, or you can use it free with usage limits on Alexa.com and in the Alexa app.
Is Alexa+ free with Prime?
Yes. Amazon states that all Prime members get Alexa+ for free, on Echo devices, Fire TV, the Alexa app and Alexa.com.
Is Alexa+ cheaper than Prime?
No. Alexa+ alone is $19.99 per month, which costs more than a Prime membership for most people, and Prime includes Alexa+ plus shipping and Prime Video. If you want Alexa+ on Echo devices, Prime is the better deal.
Can I use Alexa+ on Echo without paying?
Only with Prime. The free tier without Prime covers Alexa.com and the mobile app with limits. Echo devices need Prime or the $19.99 plan for Alexa+.
Does Alexa+ have an annual plan?
Amazon does not list an annual Alexa+ plan. The way to pay yearly is an annual Prime membership, which includes Alexa+.
Are there extra costs with Alexa+?
The assistant itself has no add ons, but tasks it completes through partners cost money: Uber rides, Grubhub and Uber Eats orders, Ticketmaster tickets, Thumbtack jobs and grocery orders all bill at those services' prices and fees.
Can I cancel Alexa+?
Yes. The standalone plan is monthly, so you can cancel before the next billing date. Prime members can also roll back to the original Alexa for now, per TechCrunch.
