By StackBlitz

Bolt.new is a fast way to prototype sites and apps in the browser, and its free plan's 1M tokens a month and rollover tokens on Pro are generous on paper. The tradeoff is that token use grows with project size, and its Trustpilot score is 1.6 from 204 reviews, mostly about token drain and support.

What it is

Bolt.new is a browser based builder from StackBlitz, the company behind the in browser WebContainers development environment. You describe a site or app and Bolt writes the code, runs it in the browser, and publishes it on Bolt hosting. Bolt lists marketing sites, portfolios, online stores, dashboards, internal tools and presentations (Bolt Slides) as use cases, with templates for each.

Bolt Cloud covers the backend side: Bolt Database for stored data, hosting and publishing, and custom domain connection. Version history and GitHub integration handle code backup. Paid plans let you choose a database provider.

Bolt picks models for you. It offers two agents: Standard, described as fast and token efficient for small and medium apps and clear tasks, and Max, with maximum reasoning for large apps and interconnected features. Max needs a paid plan. Bolt says it handles model selection behind the scenes and may change how agents perform without changing your workflow.

Pricing explained

Plan Price Tokens Hosting and limits
Free $0 1M a month, 300K daily cap Up to 333k web requests, 10MB uploads, Bolt branding, unlimited databases
Pro $25 a month billed monthly From 10M a month, no daily cap, rollover Up to 1M web requests, 100MB uploads, custom domains, no branding, choice of database provider, AI image editing
Teams $30 per member a month billed monthly Each member gets their own allotment, not shared Centralized billing, admin controls, private NPM registries, design system prompts
Enterprise Custom Custom SSO, audit logs, 24/7 priority support, data governance

Prices as listed on Bolt.new's pricing page in October 2026. Yearly billing saves up to 28%.

Unit price. Pro works out to $2.50 per million tokens on the entry tier.

Rollover. Paid tokens stay valid for two months from the start of the cycle they were issued in. Reload tokens on Pro never expire; Bolt says upgrading to a higher tier is the more cost effective way to get more tokens.

When you run out. Free users wait for the daily or monthly reset. Paid users who use up the monthly allowance wait for the renewal date, upgrade, or buy reloads.

Worked example. Bolt does not publish a tokens per message figure. Using one reviewer's report of 212K tokens for a small change on a mid sized project, 10M Pro tokens cover about 47 such changes, or about $0.53 each. A fresh landing page project uses far fewer tokens per message, which is why Bolt shines on small builds.

Team math. Five people on Teams cost $150 a month, each with their own tokens. Lovable's equivalent can be one $25 or $100 plan shared by all five.

Key features

Generous free plan

1M tokens a month, private projects, hosting and unlimited databases on Free is the best free allowance among the big four app builders. Enough to build and publish a small site at no cost.

Standard and Max agents

Two agent tiers rather than a model picker. Standard is cheaper on tokens; Max handles harder work on paid plans.

Plan mode

Bolt includes a Plan mode for working out an idea before code is generated. As on every builder, it is the cheapest way to avoid paying for a wrong first build.

Free code edits

Direct edits in Code view do not use tokens. For text, color and spacing tweaks, editing by hand saves real money on large projects.

Bolt Cloud database and hosting

Bolt Database, hosting with request limits per plan, and custom domains on Pro. Unlimited databases on every plan.

Teams features for developers

Private NPM registries and design system knowledge with per package prompts on Teams, useful for companies that want Bolt to build with their own component library.

What users say

On Trustpilot, Bolt.new scores 1.6 from 204 reviews. About 83% of reviews are 1 star and 5% are 5 star, and the company replies to about 8% of negative reviews.

Recurring complaints:

  • Token depletion: large token counts for minor tasks, including one report of 212K tokens for a small targeted change, and allowances used up while the AI fixed its own bugs.
  • AI quality: the agent creating errors and then spending tokens resolving them.
  • Support: mostly automated replies, with some users waiting more than two weeks.
  • Stability: crashes, broken GitHub integration and server errors.
  • Refunds: users unable to recover tokens lost to errors.

Recurring praise: quick website and landing page creation for simple projects, a smooth start, and a good fit for beginners with small scope.

Support channels by plan: free users get community support on Discord; paid users get email support on weekday business hours.

Privacy and security

  • Certifications: Bolt's trust center lists SOC 2 Type 2, GDPR and CCPA (profile updated July 8, 2026).
  • Architecture: code executes client side in the browser, which Bolt says reduces the server side attack surface.
  • Training: the StackBlitz privacy policy says eligible Bolt content created from October 7, 2026, by accounts outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, may be used to train, fine tune and evaluate AI models. Opt out in account settings or via privacy@stackblitz.com; Bolt says it stops selecting the account for new training runs within 15 days. EEA, UK and Swiss accounts are exempt.
  • Subprocessors: Bolt relies on third party AI providers listed in its trust center rather than in the policy.

If your project includes client data, switch the training setting off before you start.

Who it is for

  • Anyone who wants to build a small site or prototype for free
  • Developers who want a fast browser sandbox with hosting
  • Companies that need private NPM packages and design system prompts in an AI builder
  • Builders willing to make small edits by hand to save tokens

Who should skip it

  • You are building a large app. Tokens per message grow with project size. Replit Agent prices by completed task instead.
  • You need a team on one budget. Teams tokens are per member. Lovable shares credits across unlimited members.
  • You want visible cost per change. Lovable publishes per message credit examples; Bolt does not.
  • You want polished React UI on Vercel. v0 is built for that.

Alternatives

  • Lovable: best overall for non developers, $25 for 100 credits
  • Replit Agent: backend, mobile and deployment options, $20 with $20 of usage
  • v0: Next.js front ends, GitHub pull requests, $30 per user

Verdict

Bolt.new is a strong free starting point and a fair $25 Pro plan for small projects: 10M tokens, rollover, custom domains and unlimited databases. The meter is the problem. Because every message re reads your project, costs rise as the app grows, and its reviews are among the weakest in the category. Use it for prototypes, landing pages and small tools, keep projects small, edit by hand where you can, and turn off training on your content. For a larger app, start on Lovable or Replit instead. Our full ranking is in best AI app builders.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bolt.new free?

Yes. The free plan includes 1M tokens a month with a 300K token daily cap, public and private projects, website hosting up to 333k web requests, unlimited databases and 10MB file uploads. Sites carry Bolt branding, and free tokens do not roll over.

How much does Bolt.new cost?

Pro is $25 a month billed monthly, starting at 10M tokens with no daily limit. Higher Pro tiers add more tokens. Teams is $30 per member per month billed monthly. Enterprise is custom. Yearly billing saves up to 28%.

Why does Bolt.new use so many tokens?

Bolt says most token usage comes from reading, understanding and syncing your project files, so larger projects use more tokens per message. Fix loops add to it: reviewers describe the AI introducing errors and then spending tokens repairing them.

How many messages do 10M Bolt tokens buy?

It depends on project size, and Bolt does not publish a per message figure. One Trustpilot reviewer reported 212K tokens for a small targeted change, which would allow roughly 47 such changes on 10M tokens. A small new project uses far less per message than a large one.

Do Bolt.new tokens roll over?

On paid plans, unused monthly tokens stay valid for two months from the start of the billing cycle in which you got them, so they roll over one extra month. Reload tokens bought on Pro do not expire. Free plan tokens do not roll over.

Does Bolt.new train AI on my code?

Its privacy policy says that for accounts outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, eligible Bolt content created from October 7, 2026 may be used to train and improve AI models. You can opt out in account settings or by contacting privacy@stackblitz.com, and Bolt says it stops selecting that account's content for new training runs within 15 days.

Is Bolt.new better than Lovable?

For a bigger free allowance and quick prototypes, Bolt.new. For most non developers building a real app, Lovable: same $25 entry price, visible credit cost per message, unlimited members per plan and a 4.2 Trustpilot score from 1,847 reviews against Bolt.new's 1.6 from 204.

Can I edit code in Bolt.new without using tokens?

Yes. Bolt says direct edits in Code view do not consume tokens, so small copy or style changes are cheaper to make by hand than by prompt.
