Midjourney Review 2026: Pricing, Features and Verdict
Midjourney V8.2 reviewed on its October 2026 plans, GPU time, editing tools, ownership terms and tradeoffs.
By , research by the BestBots team ยท Updated Oct 18, 2026
Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Midjourney is the strongest pick for styled, art directed images, and V8.2 adds prompt based editing, up to four reference images and 5 second video on the same plan. It costs $10 to $120 a month with no free trial on the web, images are public unless you pay $60 or more, and there is no public API.

Midjourney V8.2 still produces the most styled, art directed images in the category and adds editing, personalization and 5 second video on one plan. The tradeoffs: no free trial on the web, no public API, images are public unless you pay $60 a month for Stealth Mode, and companies over $1M in revenue must buy Pro or Mega to own their work.

What it is
Midjourney is an independent AI lab that sells an image and video generator by subscription. You use it on midjourney.com or in Discord. You type a prompt, Midjourney returns a grid of images, and you refine with variations, upscales, edits or a new prompt. The current default model is V8.2, released as default on July 24, 2026, with V8.1 and V7 still selectable through the version parameter.
What sets it apart is the default look. Midjourney describes V8.2 output as "more creative, bold, sophisticated, and edgy," and it leans into taste controls: Personalization profiles learn your preferences from images you rate, Moodboards apply a set of reference images as a style, and Style References copy a look. If you want an image that looks designed rather than literal, this is the tool most comparison sites still put first for art.
Pricing explained
Every plan is a subscription that renews monthly or yearly. Annual billing saves 20% but is paid up front.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Fast GPU time | Relax mode | Stealth |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $10 | $96 ($8 a month) | 3.3 hours (200 minutes) | None | No |
| Standard | $30 | $288 ($24 a month) | 15 hours | Unlimited images | No |
| Pro | $60 | $576 ($48 a month) | 30 hours | Unlimited images and SD video | Yes |
| Mega | $120 | $1,152 ($96 a month) | 60 hours | Unlimited images and SD video | Yes |
Prices from Midjourney's plan comparison in October 2026. Extra Fast GPU time costs $4 per hour on every plan.
What a GPU hour means. Midjourney meters Fast time, not images. Its version docs say a V8.1 SD job costs 0.8 minutes and an HD job 1.3 minutes. Basic's 200 minutes is therefore about 250 SD jobs or about 150 HD jobs a month. Upscaling can cost twice the GPU time of the first image, and video costs more again.
Relax mode is the real value line. From Standard up, once Fast time runs out you keep generating images in Relax mode at no extra cost, just slower. For most hobbyists and freelancers, Standard at $30 is the plan that removes the meter.
Concurrency. Basic and Standard run 3 image jobs at once. Pro and Mega run 12 Fast jobs or 3 Relax jobs. Repeat and permutation batches are capped at 4 jobs on Basic, 10 on Standard and 40 on Pro and Mega.
The $1M rule. If you work for a company with more than $1M a year in gross revenue, Midjourney requires Pro or Mega for the company to own its images. For a business, the effective entry price is $60 a month, or $48 billed annually.

Key features
V8.2 image model
V8.2 is tuned for aesthetics, image quality and Personalization. V8.1, which preceded it, rendered standard jobs about 4 to 5 times faster than earlier versions and improved prompt reading; Raw mode removes default styling when you want the prompt followed more literally. The maximum aspect ratio is 14:1, or 4:1 in HD.
Resolution and upscaling
SD images in V8.2 start at 1024 x 1024 px for a square. The Subtle and Creative upscalers double each side to 2048 x 2048 px; Creative adds new detail and can fix awkward hands, Subtle keeps the original look. HD images generate at 2048 px directly and cannot be upscaled further. For print sizes beyond 2K you need a third party upscaler, which Midjourney's own docs suggest.
Edit Model
The Edit Model, introduced with V8.2, does three jobs: edit an existing image with written instructions, generate a new image from up to four reference images, and work in the Editor for inpainting and outpainting. It replaced Omni Reference, Character Reference and the Retexture tool. You can change perspective ("let's see this image from behind"), combine characters and objects, and restyle with Moodboards.
Personalization and Moodboards
Rate images to build a Personalization profile, and Midjourney applies your taste to new prompts. Moodboards turn a set of your images into a reusable style. These are the tools that make Midjourney feel like it knows your aesthetic, and they have no close equivalent in ChatGPT or Gemini.
Video
Any image can become a 5 second video with low or high motion, looping, and an optional end frame. All plans can make videos in Fast mode; Standard and up can make HD video; only Pro and Mega get Relax mode video, at SD resolution.
Discord and web
The web app now covers creation, organizing, editing and video. Discord remains supported, and Pro and Mega can work privately in direct messages with Stealth.
What users say
Midjourney's Trustpilot page shows 1.7 out of 5 from 374 reviews, with 76% of them one star. The recurring complaints are billing (auto renewals and annual plans people did not expect), no direct support channel for paying users, and frustration when prompts with anatomy or specific layouts come out wrong. Positive reviews praise the artwork when a prompt lands. Midjourney has no official iOS app in the US App Store and does not appear to manage a G2 profile we could open, so treat the Trustpilot sample as a support signal rather than a quality score. Its review base on these sites is far smaller than ChatGPT's or Gemini's.
Commercial rights and copyright
Midjourney's terms are specific, so here is what they say, quoted from Section 4 of the Terms of Service:
- Ownership. "You own all Assets You create with the Services to the fullest extent possible under applicable law." Ownership persists if you later downgrade or cancel.
- Revenue threshold. A company, or an employee of a company, with more than $1,000,000 a year in revenue must subscribe to Pro or Mega to own its assets.
- Upscales of others' images remain owned by the original creator.
- License to Midjourney. You grant Midjourney a perpetual, worldwide, royalty free, irrevocable copyright license to reproduce, adapt, display and distribute your prompts and outputs. This survives termination.
- Public by default. Content is "publicly viewable and remixable" unless you engage Stealth Mode (Pro and Mega), and Midjourney commits only to "best efforts" not to publish Stealth assets.
- No warranty. Assets are provided as is, without warranty of non infringement, and you indemnify Midjourney against third party claims arising from your use.
Midjourney's commercial use page adds that it cannot give copyright advice and that laws differ by country. In practice: you can sell prints, use images in client work and run them in ads, but Midjourney offers no IP indemnity, unlike Adobe's enterprise Firefly plans.
Privacy and security
Midjourney's privacy policy covers data collected through the service and "through the process of training Midjourney machine learning algorithms," and lists improving the service as a purpose. We found no published opt out from training in the policy or terms. Prompts, uploads and outputs are covered by the broad license above, and anything not in Stealth Mode is public in the gallery. Midjourney publishes no SOC 2 or ISO certification on its docs site. Disputes go to binding arbitration in Santa Clara County, California.
Who it is for
- Illustrators, concept artists and designers who want a strong aesthetic out of the box and tools to steer it.
- Freelancers and hobbyists who will generate a lot: Standard at $30 gives unlimited Relax images.
- Brand and mood board work where variety and style matter more than exact layout.
- Creators who want image to video on the same plan.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who needs a free tier. Try Nano Banana or ChatGPT Images instead.
- Developers. No public API, and automation is banned. Use FLUX or Stable Diffusion.
- Companies that need private work below $60 a month, or IP indemnity. Adobe Firefly is the safer commercial choice.
- Text heavy graphics like posters and logos. Ideogram is built for that.
Alternatives
- ChatGPT Images: easier, conversational edits, included in ChatGPT.
- Nano Banana: free in Gemini, strong photo edits.
- Adobe Firefly: commercially safe training and enterprise indemnity.
- Ideogram: best for text in images.
- Leonardo.Ai: free daily tokens and unlimited relaxed generation from $30.

Verdict
Midjourney remains the tool to beat for art direction: V8.2's look, Personalization, Moodboards and the new Edit Model make it the most controllable creative generator in our set, and Standard at $30 removes the meter with unlimited Relax images. It ranks behind ChatGPT Images and Nano Banana overall because it has no free tier, no API, public images below $60, and a $1M revenue rule that pushes businesses to Pro. If you make images for their look, it is worth the subscription; if you need literal edits, text or automation, pick a rival.

ElevenLabs4.4Frequently asked questions
Is Midjourney free?
No. Midjourney's help center says no free trial is currently available on Discord or midjourney.com. A limited trial is offered in the niji journey app for iOS and Android, which runs Midjourney's anime focused model. The cheapest paid plan is Basic at $10 a month, or $8 a month billed annually.
How much does Midjourney cost?
Basic is $10 a month with 3.3 Fast GPU hours, Standard is $30 with 15 hours and unlimited Relax images, Pro is $60 with 30 hours and Stealth Mode, and Mega is $120 with 60 hours. Annual plans cost $96, $288, $576 and $1,152 a year. Extra Fast time is $4 per hour.
Can I use Midjourney images commercially?
Yes. Midjourney's terms say you own the assets you create to the fullest extent the law allows, and that ownership survives cancellation. Two exceptions: if your company earns more than $1M a year you must be on Pro or Mega, and upscales of other people's images stay theirs. Copyright protection for AI images varies by country, which Midjourney tells you to check with a lawyer.
Are my Midjourney images private?
Not by default. The terms say your content is publicly viewable and remixable unless you use Stealth Mode, which is available only on Pro and Mega. Even with Stealth, anything you make in a shared Discord channel is visible to that channel.
What is the latest Midjourney version?
V8.2, the default since July 24, 2026. It focuses on aesthetics, image quality and Personalization, and ships with the Edit Model that replaced Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture. V8.1, released in April 2026, added native 2K HD images and about 4 to 5 times faster standard jobs.
Does Midjourney have an API?
No public API is listed, and the terms say you may not use automated tools to access the service or generate assets. Each account is for one user. If you need image generation in your own product, look at GPT Image, Nano Banana, FLUX or Stability AI's APIs.
How many images can I make on the Basic plan?
Basic includes 200 Fast GPU minutes a month. Midjourney's docs say a V8.1 SD job costs about 0.8 minutes and an HD job about 1.3 minutes, so roughly 250 SD jobs or about 150 HD jobs before you buy more time. Upscales can cost twice the GPU time of the original image, and video costs more.
Is Midjourney better than ChatGPT for images?
For styled, art directed images, most comparisons favor Midjourney. For following exact instructions, editing by conversation and text in images, ChatGPT Images is easier and is included in a ChatGPT plan you may already pay for. See our Midjourney vs ChatGPT Images comparison for the scenario by scenario call.
