Ideogram is the best AI image generator for text: posters, logos, ads, thumbnails and print designs, with editable text layers, transparent background models and upscales to 8K. Plus at $20 a month gives 2,400 credits and an unlimited slow queue afterward. The free tier is thin, at 30 credits a week with public images, and Ideogram offers no refunds.

Ideogram is the pick when the words in the image have to be right: posters, logos, ads and t-shirts, with editable text layers, transparent backgrounds and 8K upscales. The tradeoffs are a thin free tier (30 credits a week, public images) and no refunds on subscriptions or credits.

What it is
Ideogram is an AI company that makes its own image and video models and an app around them. You pick a model, write a prompt (plain text, or JSON with text elements and bounding boxes), and get a set of images. Its reputation was built on spelling words correctly inside images, which most generators struggled with for years.
The app now runs several Ideogram models plus partner models:
- Ideogram 4.5: takes up to 5 reference images for editing, combining and consistent characters; 1K or 2K output; Very low to High quality.
- Ideogram 4.0: very wide ratios such as 23:9 and 3:1, for banners and headers.
- Ideogram 3.0: the only model with style presets, style references, negative prompts and color palettes, good for logos and brand graphics.
- Transparent models (4.0 and 3.0) for stickers, t-shirts and print on demand, with output up to 8K.
- Partner models: GPT Image 2.0 and 2.5, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro (premium), plus free Z-Image and P-Image models.
Every plan, free included, can use all Ideogram models.

How credits work. Images, videos, edits, upscales and app runs all cost credits; the cost depends on model, quality, size and number of outputs, and the Generate button shows it before you run. Yearly plans still get credits monthly. Unused monthly credits do not roll over; bought credits last 365 days.
The slow queue. On Plus, Pro and Team, once credits run out you keep generating with Ideogram models in a slower queue, with no limit. Reference images, edits, upscales, custom models and partner models still cost credits. You cannot choose the slow queue while you still have credits.
What changes by tier. Plus adds private generation and quality export. Pro adds Batch Generation (up to 500 prompt rows from a CSV) and a bigger queue. Team adds central billing, admin and per member credits, with a 2 user minimum.
No refunds. Cancel at least 5 days before renewal.

Key features
Text rendering and layers
Put exact words in quotes and Ideogram is built to spell them correctly. If one word is off, fix only that area with AI edit or Select area in Studio, or run Layerize text to convert lettering into editable layers you can retype, change fonts and rearrange. That last step is rare among image generators.
Studio editor
Studio is a layered editor for generated or uploaded images with canvas and layer tools, versions and automatic saving. Precise Edit adds mask based inpainting.
Transparent backgrounds and print
Ideogram 4.0 Transparent outputs at 1K, 2K, 4K or 8K with no background, and you download as PNG. On published features, this is the shortest path from prompt to a print on demand file among the tools we compared.
Upscale to 8K
The Upscale app offers 2x, 4x or 8x up to the equivalent of 8192 x 8192 pixels, using Topaz upscalers (Bloom 2, Standard 2, Redefine, Text Refine, Wonder 3.5) or Nano Banana Pro. Topaz Text Refine is meant to keep small lettering crisp.
Batch Generation and Ad Resizer
Pro can run up to 500 prompts from a spreadsheet. Ad Resizer reformats one ad for Instagram, Stories, TikTok, YouTube, display and print sizes while keeping text inside safe zones.
Characters and custom models
Save a character from one photo and reuse it, or train a custom model on your own image set based on Ideogram 3.0.
API and MCP
Personal API keys spend your app credits. The Ideogram MCP server lets Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor and Cline generate, edit, upscale and remove backgrounds through your account.
What users say
Ideogram's iOS app has 4.8 on the App Store from 2,670 ratings, and Trustpilot shows 3.8 from 167 reviews. Recurring praise: fast, intuitive, high image quality, and a support team described as quick and helpful. Recurring complaints: subscription management and interface changes, advanced features gated to higher tiers, unexpected charges, and a free tier some call too small to be useful.
Commercial rights and copyright
From Ideogram's Terms of Service:
- Ownership. "We do not claim any ownership rights in your User Input or User Output, and we do not restrict your ability to use User Output for your own purposes (including for commercial purposes)." To the extent Ideogram acquires rights in output, it assigns them to you.
- Not unique. Output may be similar or the same as other users' output.
- License to Ideogram. You grant Ideogram a royalty free, worldwide license to host, reproduce, display, publish and modify your content as required to operate, improve, promote and provide the service.
- Public remixing. Other users can use, modify and remix your public content, but not content you post privately on a plan that allows it.
- Liability. Ideogram tells you to consider what third party permissions you need for commercial use and disclaims liability for commercial use of output.
Ideogram's FAQ says whether you can sell print on demand designs depends on these terms and that you are responsible for not breaking laws or others' rights. No IP indemnity is offered on self serve plans.
Privacy and security
The key privacy setting is plan level: on Free and legacy Basic, everything you generate is public. On Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise, new images stay unpublished until you publish them. The content license includes the right to use content to "improve" the service, and we found no published opt out from that in the terms. Teams can turn off community publishing for the workspace.
Who it is for
- Small businesses and marketers making posters, ads, menus and social graphics with text.
- Print on demand sellers who need transparent PNGs at 4K or 8K.
- Logo and brand exploration with Ideogram 3.0 style controls.
- Developers and agents that need text accurate images via API or MCP.
Who should skip it
- Free users who want volume. Leonardo.Ai gives 150 tokens a day and Nano Banana is free in Gemini.
- Artists after a painterly signature look. Midjourney leads there.
- Brands that need indemnity. Adobe Firefly offers it to eligible enterprises.
- Anyone who wants a refund safety net. Ideogram has none.
Alternatives
- Midjourney: stronger art style.
- ChatGPT Images: conversational edits and solid text, included in ChatGPT.
- Canva AI: generate inside templates.
- Adobe Firefly: commercially safe models.
Verdict
Ideogram is the specialist to pick when words matter: text rendering, Layerize text, transparent models and 8K upscales cover the full path from prompt to print file, and the unlimited slow queue on Plus makes $20 go far. It ranks behind the big three because the free tier is small and public, partner models and edits always cost credits, and refunds are off the table. For posters, logos and ads, it beats every general purpose tool we compared.
