Each AI request costs 1 to 5 credits depending on the model, so a support conversation of four replies on a cheap model costs about 15 cents on Standard. Extra credits are $40 per 1,000.

What a credit means in practice

Chatbase charges credits per request to the AI model, priced by model in its docs:

Credits per request Example models
1 Chatbase Auto, GPT-4o Mini, GPT-6 Luna, GPT-OSS, Claude 5.5 Haiku, Gemini 3 Flash, DeepSeek V4 Flash, Mistral Small 4
2 GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-5.2, Claude 5.5 Sonnet, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Grok 4.7, Mistral Medium 3.5
4 GPT-5.5
5 Claude 5.5 Opus

One reply is one request unless an action runs. Chatbase's FAQ gives the example of a booking: the agent first calls the calendar action, then writes the reply, so one answer costs two requests.

Plan Replies on 1 credit models On 2 credit models On Claude 5.5 Opus
Hobby (700) 700 350 140
Standard (4,000) 4,000 2,000 800
Pro (15,000) 15,000 7,500 3,000

Cost per credit at monthly prices: $0.057 on Hobby, $0.0375 on Standard, $0.033 on Pro, and $0.04 for recharge credits.

Worked examples

Assume an average conversation is four AI replies, with one action in a quarter of conversations.

Business Conversations a month Model Credits used Plan Monthly bill
Side project 150 1 credit about 640 Hobby $40
Small business with handoff 800 1 credit 3,400 Standard $150
Growing SaaS 1,500 2 credit 12,750 Pro $500
Same SaaS on Opus 1,500 5 credit 31,875 Pro + 16,875 extra $1,175

The last row shows the biggest pricing risk: switching to a top model multiplies credit use. On Pro, 16,875 extra credits at $40 per 1,000 adds $675. Per conversation, the 1 credit small business pays about 19 cents, the 2 credit SaaS about 33 cents, and the Opus setup about 78 cents.

Hidden costs to plan for

  • Model choice. A 5 credit model costs five times a 1 credit model per reply.
  • Actions. Each tool call adds a request.
  • Branding. $1,188 a year to remove the Chatbase mark, more than Hobby itself.
  • Extra agents. Separate agents for support and sales, or for two brands, cost $300 a year each.
  • Hobby gaps. No helpdesk inbox, no voice and no API on Hobby, so most businesses with human support land on Standard.
  • Test credits. Testing uses a separate small allowance (200 to 1,000 a month); heavy testing can spill into real credits.

How Chatbase compares

Product AI unit price Platform fee
Chatbase 1 to 5 credits per request, about $0.033 to $0.057 per credit $40 to $500 per month
Crisp Bundled AI credits, about $0.06 per conversation by Crisp's estimate $45 to $295 per workspace
HubSpot Customer Agent $0.50 per resolution Service Hub from $100 per seat
Tidio Lyro $0.70 to $0.78 per conversation Free to $349
Intercom Fin $0.99 per outcome Seats from $29, none standalone

On cheap models, Chatbase is among the lowest cost per conversation in the category. On top models it lands near Tidio. Compare all tracked prices on the AI Price Index.

How to keep the bill down

  • Use Chatbase Auto or a 1 credit model for FAQs; save 2 to 5 credit models for agents that need reasoning.
  • Keep actions to the ones customers use; each call costs a request.
  • Pay yearly once usage is stable for 20% off.
  • Watch the first month's credits per conversation, then size the plan.

Is Chatbase worth the price?

Yes for AI first support and sales on cheap or mid tier models: Standard at $120 a month billed yearly buys an agent, a shared inbox, voice and enough credits for about 800 conversations. It is poor value if you need many agents, want to remove branding cheaply or plan to run a top model on every reply.
