GitHub Copilot is the best Claude Code alternative for most developers: Pro costs $10 a month, includes Claude models alongside GPT, Gemini and Grok, and runs in every major IDE plus a CLI. If you want the same terminal first workflow from another lab, Codex on ChatGPT Plus at $20 is closest, and Cline is the best free option.
Our top picks
Why look beyond Claude Code
Claude Code is one of the strongest terminal agents, so most people who look for alternatives have a specific reason:
No free plan. Claude Code is not included on Claude Free. The cheapest way in is Pro at $20 a month or pay per token on the API.
Claude only. A Claude subscription runs Claude models. If you want GPT or Gemini on the same plan, you need another tool.
Time window limits. Usage resets on a rolling 5 hour window with weekly limits on top, and your chats share the pool. Anthropic publishes no message count, so heavy users either step up to Max at $100 or $200 or buy usage credits at API rates.
Price at the top end. Max 20x is $200 a month, billed monthly only.
Data settings. On Free, Pro and Max, you choose whether chats and coding sessions are used for training. Team and Enterprise do not train on your content by default.
How to choose an alternative
Keep Claude, change the tool? Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop) and Kiro include Claude models in their plans; Cline runs them on your own key.
Same workflow, different lab? Codex is the closest match: CLI, IDE extension and desktop app, bundled with a $20 chat plan.
Need numbers? Copilot, Kiro and Gemini Code Assist publish credits or daily requests. Claude Code, Codex and Windsurf meter by window or quota without a fixed count.
Pair or delegate? For backlog tickets, Devin and the cloud agents in Copilot and Codex return pull requests; for hands on work, a terminal or IDE agent fits.

What you give up
Claude Code has strengths that not every alternative matches: a full featured terminal CLI, extensions for VS Code and JetBrains, a desktop app and web version on one plan, the Claude chat apps bundled in, and flat Max tiers for all day use. Copilot and Kiro meter by credits, Cline by tokens, and Cursor bills Claude at API list price. If your main complaint is limits rather than price, compare Max 5x at $100 with Copilot Max or Kiro Pro Max before you move.
How we picked
We compared coding agents that cover Claude Code's jobs (terminal agent, IDE agent, multi file edits, cloud handoff) using published facts only: pricing pages and docs opened in October 2026, plus public review listings with at least 10 reviews. Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Claude Code?
GitHub Copilot for most developers: it costs $10 a month, includes Claude models along with GPT, Gemini and Grok, has a CLI and agent mode in every major IDE, and offers a free tier. If you want the same terminal first workflow from another lab, Codex on ChatGPT Plus at $20 is the closest match.
Is there a free alternative to Claude Code?
Yes. Cline is free and open source, and you only pay your model provider for tokens. GitHub Copilot Free includes 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests a month plus agent mode and the CLI. Windsurf (Devin Desktop) and Kiro also have free tiers with light quotas.
Can I use Claude models without paying for Claude Code?
Yes. GitHub Copilot, Windsurf (Devin Desktop) and Kiro include Claude models in their plans, Cursor offers them at API list price on Premium, and Cline runs them on your own API key. You lose Claude Code's own tooling but keep the models.
Is Codex better than Claude Code?
They are priced the same at entry and for teams. Codex adds iOS, a web app, cloud tasks and automatic GitHub code review and has Pro tiers with no current 5 hour limit; Claude Code adds JetBrains and a desktop app and comes with the Claude apps. Pick based on which models you prefer; see our Claude Code vs Codex comparison.
What is a cheaper alternative to Claude Max?
GitHub Copilot Pro+ at $39 (7,000 credits) or Max at $100 (20,000 credits), Kiro Pro Max at $100 (5,000 credits), and Codex Pro at $100. Which is cheaper depends on how many agent hours you run; Copilot and Kiro publish their credit counts so you can estimate.
Is there an open source Claude Code alternative?
Cline is open source under Apache 2.0 with about 70,500 GitHub stars, and Gemini CLI is open source under Apache 2.0 with about 107,400 stars. Gemini CLI now needs a paid Code Assist license or paid API key to sign in.
Why would I switch from Claude Code?
Common reasons are the lack of a free plan, hitting the 5 hour or weekly limits, wanting GPT or Gemini models on the same subscription, or company policy. On Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic also asks users to choose whether sessions can be used for training; Team and Enterprise do not train on content by default.
