What the limits mean in practice
Anthropic does not publish a message count. Its pricing FAQ says every plan resets on a rolling five hour window, paid plans add weekly limits on top, and your terminal work and your chats draw from one pool. How far it stretches depends on conversation length, the model and the features you use.
Three practical rules follow:
- Model choice is the biggest lever. Opus uses far more of the session than Haiku. Plan on Opus, implement on Sonnet, and use Haiku for quick edits.
- Chats count too. If you spend the morning in Claude chat on Pro, you have less left for Claude Code that session.
- When you hit the wall you can wait for the reset, upgrade, or turn on usage credits on paid plans, which continue at standard API rates.
Anthropic also says it may apply other limits at its discretion, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature limits. Check Settings, then Usage, to see where you stand.
The API route
Instead of a subscription, Claude Code can run on an Anthropic Console API key or a third party provider such as Amazon Bedrock. You pay per token at these listed rates:
| Model | Input per million | Output per million | Cache read per million |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K) | $0.10 | $0.50 | $0.01 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | $0.10 |
| Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | $0.20 |
| Fable 5.1 | $10 | $50 | $0.25 |
Fast mode for Opus 5.5 runs at 2x standard pricing, and US only inference is 1.1x. On subscriptions, Fable is not on Free; on paid plans the pricing table lists it through usage credits or a share (50%) of weekly limits, depending on the tier.
Hidden costs and fine print
- Max is monthly only, so there is no annual saving above Pro.
- Weekly limits exist on paid plans in addition to the 5 hour window.
- Enterprise has a floor: 20 seats at $20 is $400 a month, or $4,800 a year, before any usage, and usage is billed at API rates on top.
- Payments are generally non refundable; cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
- Training setting: on Free, Pro and Max you choose whether your chats and coding sessions are used for training (five year retention if on, 30 days if off). Team and Enterprise have no training on your content by default.
Worked examples
Solo developer, light use. Pro on annual billing: $200 a year. Includes Claude Code in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop and web, plus the Claude apps.
Solo developer who hits limits twice a week. Pro at $20 plus usage credits. If each overflow is about 2.5 million input and 250,000 output tokens on Sonnet 5.5 ($5 plus $2.50), eight overflows a month add about $60, so $80 total. That is close to Max 5x at $100, which also adds $100 in API credits, so Max is the better buy past that point.
Heavy agent user. Max 20x at $200 a month, or $2,400 a year, with $200 a month in API credits for side projects or CI.
Team of 10. Ten Standard seats: $250 a month, or $200 billed annually ($2,400 a year). Upgrade two heavy users to Premium: annual cost becomes 8 times $20 plus 2 times $100, or $360 a month.
CI pipeline on the API. A nightly job using 5 million input and 500,000 output tokens on Sonnet 5.5 costs $10 plus $5, so $15 a night, about $450 a month before caching.
How it compares
| Tool | Entry paid plan | Heavy plan | Team seat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | $20 (Pro) | $100 or $200 (Max) | $25 or $20 annually |
| GitHub Copilot | $10 (Pro) | $39 (Pro+) or $100 (Max) | $19 (Business) |
| Codex | $20 (ChatGPT Plus) | $100, $200 or $500 (Pro) | $25 or $20 annually |
| Cursor | $8 Plus (Grok only), $30 Premium | $100 or $200 | $30, $100 or $200 |
| Windsurf (Devin Desktop) | $20 (Pro) | $200 (Max) | $80 plus $40 per seat |
Claude Code and Codex match on the $20 entry and the team seat. Copilot is cheaper to start and includes Claude models among others in its credits. Cursor's included pool covers its own models only, and Claude is billed at API list price on top. See GitHub Copilot pricing, Codex pricing, Cursor pricing and the Price Index.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Claude Code cost?
Claude Code is included with Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed annually), Max 5x at $100, Max 20x at $200, Team Standard at $25 per seat monthly or $20 annually, Team Premium at $125 or $100, and Enterprise at $20 per seat billed annually plus usage at API rates. There is no separate Claude Code price.
Is Claude Code free?
No. Claude's pricing page lists Claude Code as not included on the Free plan. The lowest cost way in is Pro at $20 a month, or a Console account where you pay per token.
Is the Claude Max plan worth it for Claude Code?
If you hit Pro's 5 hour limit on most working days, yes. Max 5x at $100 gives five times Pro usage per session and $100 a month in API credits for the Claude Platform; Max 20x at $200 gives twenty times and $200. If you hit limits only now and then, Pro plus usage credits at API rates is usually cheaper.
What are Claude Code's usage limits?
There is no fixed message count. Every plan resets on a rolling five hour window and paid plans add weekly limits. Pro gives at least 5x the Free plan's usage per session, and Max gives 5x or 20x Pro. Claude Code and the Claude apps draw from the same pool.
How much does Claude Code cost on the API?
At Anthropic's listed API rates per million tokens: Claude Haiku 5.5 $0.10 input and $0.50 output, Sonnet 5.5 $2 and $10, Opus 5.5 $4 and $20, and Fable 5.1 $10 and $50. Prompt cache reads are much cheaper, for example $0.10 per million on Sonnet 5.5.
Is there an annual discount?
On Pro, yes: $200 billed up front works out to about $17 a month. Team seats drop from $25 to $20 on annual billing. Max is billed monthly only, and Enterprise is billed annually.
Does Anthropic train on my Claude Code sessions?
On Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic asks you to choose a model training setting, and its terms update says that when the setting is on it trains on data from those accounts including Claude Code sessions, with five year retention. If you turn it off, the 30 day retention period applies. Team and Enterprise have no model training on your content by default.
