How AI credits work

One credit is $0.01. GitHub uses credits for chat, agent mode, code review, the cloud agent, Copilot CLI, Spaces, Spark and Copilot Apps.

Usage varies by model and task. A quick question to a lightweight model can cost a fraction of a credit. A long agent session on a frontier model across many files costs more. GitHub does not publish a fixed credit cost per request, so watch the usage view in your first weeks.

Completions are free. Code completions and next edit suggestions do not draw credits and are unlimited on paid plans. If you mostly want autocomplete, Pro at $10 is effectively a flat fee.

Base plus flex. Each individual plan's total is split into base credits and a flex allotment. GitHub calls flex "variable additional usage on top of your base" and says it may change over time, so budget on the base number if you need certainty: 1,000 on Pro, 3,900 on Pro+, 10,000 on Max.

Running out. Individuals set a dollar budget for extra usage at $0.01 per credit, or switch to a cheaper model. On Business and Enterprise, admins set limits and decide whether paid overage is allowed; if it is off, Copilot pauses until the next cycle.

Pooled org credits. On Business and Enterprise, included credits are shared org wide with admin controls, so light users subsidize heavy ones. Code review for non licensed contributors can bill to the org as credits, if an admin enables two policies.

Hidden costs and fine print

  • Flex may shrink. Only the base allotment is a firm number.
  • Third party agents need Pro+. Delegating tasks to agents such as Claude and Codex is not on Pro.
  • Overage is easy to switch on. GitHub recommends admins set budgets, especially if paid usage policies were enabled in the past.
  • Training on individual plans. Since April 24, GitHub may use interactions from Free, Pro and Pro+ users to train models unless they opt out at github.com/settings/copilot/features. Business and Enterprise data is not used for training.
  • Free is limited to Auto model selection.

Worked examples

Autocomplete first developer. Pro at $10 a month, $120 a year. Completions are unlimited, and 1,500 credits cover regular chat.

Agent user who burns 3,000 credits a month. Pro at $10 plus 1,500 extra credits at $0.01 ($15): $25 a month. The break even with Pro+ ($39 for 7,000) is 4,400 credits a month; above that, Pro+ is cheaper.

Heavy agent user at 12,000 credits. Pro+ is $39 plus 5,000 extra ($50): $89. Max is $100 for 20,000. The break even between Pro+ and Max is 13,100 credits, so Max wins from there, and it gives headroom for spikes.

Team of 10 on Business. $190 a month, with 19,000 pooled credits. If the team uses 25,000, the extra 6,000 cost $60, so $250 a month, the same as ten Claude Team Standard seats on monthly billing.

Team of 50 on Enterprise. $1,950 a month with 195,000 pooled credits.

Frequently asked questions

How much does GitHub Copilot cost?

Copilot Free is $0, Pro is $10 a month, Pro+ is $39, Max is $100, Business is $19 per granted seat per month and Enterprise is $39 per granted seat. Extra usage beyond your included AI credits costs $0.01 per credit.

What are GitHub AI credits?

They are how Copilot meters AI usage. One credit equals $0.01. Chat, agent mode, code review, the cloud agent, Copilot CLI, Spaces and Spark use credits; how many depends on the model and the task. Code completions and next edit suggestions do not use credits.

What is the Copilot Max plan?

Max is a $100 a month individual plan built for heavy, sustained agent use. It includes 20,000 AI credits a month (10,000 base plus a 10,000 flex allotment), every model, the cloud agent, code review and third party agents.

What is a flex allotment?

Extra included usage on top of your base credits. GitHub describes it as variable additional usage and says flex allotments may change over time. On Pro the split is 1,000 base plus 500 flex, on Pro+ 3,900 plus 3,100, and on Max 10,000 plus 10,000.

Is GitHub Copilot free?

Yes, Copilot Free gives 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests a month, agent mode and the CLI, with Auto model selection. Verified students get Copilot Student free. Users on a Business or Enterprise seat cannot use Free.

Is there an annual Copilot plan?

GitHub's plans page lists monthly prices for Pro, Pro+ and Max and does not show an annual price in the current lineup.

What happens when I run out of AI credits?

On individual plans, set a dollar budget for additional usage and Copilot keeps working at $0.01 per credit, so a $10 budget buys 1,000 credits. Or switch to a lighter model. On Business and Enterprise, admins decide whether paid overage is allowed; if not, Copilot pauses until the next cycle.

Does GitHub train on my Copilot data?

On Free, Pro and Pro+, GitHub's FAQ says it may use interaction data, including prompts, suggestions and code snippets, to train models unless you opt out in your settings. GitHub says it does not use Copilot Business or Enterprise data to train its models.
