Pick Veo if you want to generate new clips with sound for the lowest price: native audio, 4K, 50 free Flow credits a day and plans from $4.99. Pick Runway if you edit existing footage, work in a team or want many models in one studio: Aleph 2.0 edits up to 30 seconds of real video, and Team pools credits.

The short answer

  • Best for most creators: Veo. Cheaper entry, native audio in every clip, 4K, and Google's SynthID on every output.
  • Best for agencies and editors: Runway. Aleph 2.0, 4K upscaling, C2PA, pooled Team credits and Enterprise indemnification.
  • Best for developers on a budget: Veo. Veo 3.1 Lite starts at $0.05 per second and Fast at $0.10, audio included.

Clip math. On Google AI Pro, 1,000 credits buy 50 Veo 3.1 Fast clips of 8 seconds, about 400 seconds with audio. On Runway Pro, 2,250 credits buy about 187 seconds of Gen-4.5 without native audio. Veo gives you about twice the seconds for $15 less. Runway's advantage is what you can do with the seconds, not how many you get. See Veo pricing and Runway pricing.

Head to head scenarios

Short social ads with voiceover

Winner: Veo. A Veo 3.1 Fast clip comes with dialogue and sound effects, so a 3 shot ad is done in Flow without a separate voice tool. On Runway you add audio in another app or with its voice clone.

Editing a client's existing footage

Winner: Runway. Aleph 2.0 changes lighting, weather, objects or camera angle on up to 30 seconds of real 1080p video while keeping the rest. Flow has video editing tools, but Veo is a generator first and they are unavailable in the EEA, UK and Switzerland.

Team production

Winner: Runway. Team at $69 per seat pools 6,900 credits per seat with API access and 1TB of storage. Google's plans are per person.

Cheapest high volume API

Winner: Veo. Veo 3.1 Lite at $0.05 per second (720p) is less than half of Runway Gen-4.5's $0.12, and includes audio.

Trying AI video for free

Winner: Veo. 50 credits every day beats Runway's 125 one time credits.

Cinematic 4K hero shot

Winner: Veo. Veo 3.1 renders 4K natively on the API ($0.60 per second) and Ultra upscales to 4K in Flow. Runway upscales Gen-4.5 720p output to 4K.

How to choose

If you mostly generate new shots, Veo gives you more seconds per dollar and audio for free. Start with the 50 daily Flow credits, then Google AI Pro at $19.99.

If you mostly edit footage you already shot, Runway's Aleph 2.0 is the reason to pay. No Veo plan matches it for in context edits of real video.

If you run a team, Runway's pooled Team credits and Enterprise paperwork (SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, indemnification) simplify procurement.

If you are building a product, compare per second API costs: Veo 3.1 Lite at $0.05 and Fast at $0.10 against Runway Gen-4.5 at $0.12, with Veo including audio.

Privacy

Google's terms say it does not claim ownership of what you generate, and its Prohibited Use Policy bans impersonation and deceptive AI content. Every Veo clip carries SynthID, which Gemini and the SynthID Detector can check.

Runway claims no ownership of outputs either, but its terms let it train on your inputs and outputs unless you are on Enterprise. Enterprise adds SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, SSO, no training on your data and legal indemnification. Runway is also a named defendant in Andersen v. Stability AI and YouTube scraping class actions that were pending as of October 2026.

Verdict

Veo wins for most people: more seconds per dollar, native audio, 4K and a free daily allowance. Runway wins for professional editors and teams who need Aleph 2.0, pooled credits and Enterprise paperwork. Many studios use both, and Runway can even run Veo 3.1 inside its app. Start with Veo's free credits; add Runway when you need to edit real footage.

Frequently asked questions

Is Veo better than Runway?

For generating new clips with sound, yes: Veo 3.1 adds native dialogue, effects and ambience, outputs up to 4K, and costs less to start. Runway is better when you need to edit existing footage with Aleph 2.0, pool credits across a team, or pick from several models in one app.

Which is cheaper, Veo or Runway?

Veo. Every Flow user gets 50 free credits a day, Google AI Plus is $4.99 and Pro $19.99. Runway Standard is $15 for about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5. On the API, Veo 3.1 Fast at 720p is $0.10 per second against Runway Gen-4.5 at $0.12.

Can Runway use Veo?

Yes. Runway lists Veo 3.1 among the third party models you can run with Runway credits, alongside Kling, Seedance and Wan. You pay Runway's credit rate for it.

Which has longer clips?

Runway Gen-4.5 makes clips of 2 to 10 seconds and Aleph 2.0 edits up to 30 seconds. Veo 3.1 makes 8 second clips with scene extension for longer shots.

Which is better for commercial work?

Both allow commercial use. Runway Enterprise adds SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001, SSO and legal indemnification, which agencies with large clients often need. Google does not claim ownership of Veo outputs, subject to its Prohibited Use Policy.

Do either add a watermark?

Veo embeds an invisible SynthID watermark in every clip. Runway paid plans have no visible watermark but attach C2PA content credentials that its public verifier can read.
