Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Stable Diffusion is the pick for developers and tinkerers who want to run image models on their own hardware: Stable Diffusion 3.5 is free to self host and fine tune for anyone under $1M in annual revenue, and you own the outputs. Stability's API starts at $0.025 an image. It is the weakest choice for casual users, with no polished first party app and a small, unhappy review base.

Stable Diffusion 3.5 is the choice for developers and tinkerers who want to run image models on their own hardware for free, fine tune them and keep full control of data. It is the weakest consumer product here: no polished first party app, a thin review base, and enterprise licensing once your company passes $1M in revenue.

What it is
Stable Diffusion is the family of open weight image models from Stability AI. Unlike Midjourney or ChatGPT, the main product is the model itself: you download the weights from Hugging Face and run them in a local tool such as ComfyUI, on a cloud GPU, or inside another app. Stability also sells the models through its Platform API and licenses them to enterprises.
The current lineup, per Stability's API catalog:
- Stable Image Ultra: the flagship service, based on Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large.
- Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large: an 8 billion parameter base model.
- SD 3.5 Large Turbo: a faster variant of Large.
- SD 3.5 Medium: the 2 and 2.5 billion parameter variants.
- SD 3.5 Flash: a distilled version of Medium for speed.
- Stable Image Core: optimized for fast, cheap generation, the successor to SDXL.
- SDXL 1.0: the legacy base model.
Pricing explained
Stable Diffusion has two price paths: self hosting under a license, or paying per image on the API.
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Community License | $0 | Self host core models; commercial use under $1M annual revenue |
| Enterprise License | Custom | Commercial use above $1M revenue, implementation support, custom training |
| Platform API | $0.01 per credit, pay as you go | Hosted models and edit tools; 25 free credits to start |
API prices per image (1 credit = $0.01):
| Service | Credits | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Stable Image Ultra | 8 | $0.08 |
| SD 3.5 Large | 6.5 | $0.065 |
| SD 3.5 Large Turbo | 4 | $0.04 |
| SD 3.5 Medium | 3.5 | $0.035 |
| Stable Image Core | 3 | $0.03 |
| SD 3.5 Flash | 2.5 | $0.025 |
| SDXL 1.0 | From 0.9 | From $0.009 |
| Creative Upscaler (to 4K) | 60 | $0.60 |
| Conservative Upscaler (to 4K) | 40 | $0.40 |
| Fast Upscaler (4x, to 4 MP) | 2 | $0.02 |
Prices from Stability's API pricing catalog in October 2026. Stability notes pricing is subject to change.
Hidden cost of free. Self hosting is free in license terms, not in hardware. You need a capable GPU or a rented cloud machine, plus time to install and maintain a tool chain. For a few hundred images a month, the API or a consumer app is often cheaper once you count that time.
Worked example. 1,000 images a month on Stable Image Core cost $30 on the API. The same volume on SD 3.5 Flash is $25, and on Ultra $80.

Key features
Open weights and fine tuning
The main reason to choose Stable Diffusion. You can fine tune, train LoRAs and hypernetworks, and run them privately. Stability's FAQ confirms LoRAs, fine tunes and retrains are allowed and are not "foundational models."
API edit toolkit
The Platform API covers far more than text to image: Erase Object, Inpaint and Search and Replace (5 credits each), Outpaint (4), Remove Background (5), Search and Recolor (5), Replace Background and Relight (8), and control endpoints for Structure, Sketch and Style Guide (5) and Style Transfer (8).
Upscaling to 4K
Creative Upscaler turns low resolution images into 4K with prompt guidance; Conservative Upscaler reaches 4K without reinterpreting the image; Fast Upscaler multiplies resolution by 4 up to 4 megapixels.
Beyond images
The same platform sells Stable Audio 3.0 and 2.5, Stable Fast 3D and Stable Point Aware 3D, and video models.
What users say
Stability AI's Trustpilot page shows 1.8 from only 16 reviews, which is too few to judge image quality. The complaints are about billing (recurring charges, cancellation, credits not refunded) and support response times, plus poor prompt adherence on video. Stable Diffusion's real user base lives in open source tools and communities rather than review sites, so treat this score as a signal about Stability's billing and support, not about the models.
Commercial rights and copyright
From the Stability AI License page:
- Free tier. "Use of the Core Models (including Stable Diffusion 3 2B) is free for everyone, unless you're using the Core Models for a commercial purpose and you or your organization generate over USD $1M... of annual revenue, regardless of the source of that revenue."
- Ownership. "As between you and Stability, you own outputs generated from the Core Models or Derivative Works (such as fine-tunes) and therefore can use those outputs at your discretion, so long as you do so in compliance with applicable law and our AUP."
- Over $1M. Contact Stability for an Enterprise license. Research only use stays free regardless of revenue, but research used in a commercial product requires registration and may need an Enterprise license.
- Restriction. You cannot use a core model or its outputs to create a new foundational model architecture.
- Revocable. The Community License can be revoked if you violate its terms.
Stability offers no IP indemnity on the Community License. Copyright protection for AI outputs varies by jurisdiction.
Privacy and security
Self hosting is the most private option in this category: prompts, uploads and outputs never leave your hardware. On the hosted API, your data goes to Stability, and its pages we opened do not list SOC 2 or similar certifications. Teams with strict data rules can run models on their own cloud through Stability's cloud platform partners or an Enterprise license.
Who it is for
- Developers building image features who want cheap API calls or self hosting.
- Companies that must keep data in house.
- Hobbyists who fine tune models and LoRAs for a specific style or character.
- Startups under $1M revenue that want free commercial use.
Who should skip it
- Non technical users. Use ChatGPT Images, Nano Banana or Canva AI.
- Artists who want a ready made look. Midjourney delivers that without setup.
- Companies over $1M revenue that do not want an enterprise negotiation. Pay per image APIs like FLUX or GPT Image are simpler.
- Anyone who needs indemnity. Adobe Firefly offers it to eligible enterprises.
Alternatives
- FLUX: Black Forest Labs' API from $0.008 an image, plus open weight licenses.
- Leonardo.Ai: hosts open models with unlimited relaxed generation from $30.
- Nano Banana: cheap Gemini API image generation.
- ChatGPT Images: the easiest consumer experience.
Verdict
Stable Diffusion is the most open option we compared: free commercial self hosting under $1M revenue, ownership of outputs, fine tuning rights and an API from $0.025 an image with a full edit toolkit. It ranks last in our overall list because most readers want an app, not a model, Stability's own review base is tiny and negative on billing, and enterprises face a custom license. For developers and privacy focused teams, it is still the right foundation.

Is Stable Diffusion free?
Yes for most people. Stability AI's Community License lets individuals and organizations with under $1M in annual revenue use the core models, including the Stable Diffusion 3.5 suite, for research, non commercial and commercial work at no cost. You need your own hardware, or a hosted service, to run them.
Can I use Stable Diffusion commercially?
Yes under $1M a year in revenue. Stability's license page says any business making under $1M annually, regardless of the source of that revenue, does not need to pay to use or distribute the core models. Once your organization passes $1M, you must contact Stability for an Enterprise license.
Who owns Stable Diffusion images?
You do, as between you and Stability. The license FAQ says you own outputs generated from the core models or derivative works such as fine tunes, and can use them at your discretion as long as you follow the law and Stability's acceptable use policy.
How much does the Stability AI API cost?
API usage is billed in credits at $0.01 each. Per image: Stable Image Ultra 8 credits ($0.08), Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large 6.5 ($0.065), SD 3.5 Large Turbo 4 ($0.04), SD 3.5 Medium 3.5 ($0.035), Stable Image Core 3 ($0.03) and SD 3.5 Flash 2.5 ($0.025). The Creative Upscaler to 4K is 60 credits ($0.60).
What is the best Stable Diffusion model?
On Stability's API, Stable Image Ultra is the flagship, based on Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large, for the highest quality and detail. SD 3.5 Large is the 8 billion parameter base model. For speed and cost, Stable Image Core and SD 3.5 Flash are the cheapest.
Can I fine tune Stable Diffusion and sell my model?
Yes, under $1M revenue. Stability's FAQ says fine tuners do not pay a license fee unless they make over $1M a year, even if they sell their models. You cannot use a core model or its outputs to create a new foundational model architecture.
Is the Stability Community License permanent?
It is revocable if you violate its terms, according to Stability's FAQ. Otherwise, it applies as long as you stay within the conditions, including the $1M revenue threshold.
