Pick Botpress if you want a customer chat agent with a public price: Free covers 100 conversations a month and Plus is $150 a month billed annually for 250. Pick Voiceflow if your agent must also answer the phone or you need HIPAA and ISO 27001 listed. Voiceflow publishes no prices, so budget time for a demo.

The short answer

Botpress and Voiceflow both build AI agents that talk to customers, and both started long before the current LLM wave. They split on two things: voice and price transparency.

Botpress is a developer friendly chat agent builder. It publishes every self serve plan, gives you 100 free conversations a month, allows unlimited agents on paid plans and adds a code first ADK. Voice is held back for Enterprise.

Voiceflow is a CX platform. One agent serves web chat, WhatsApp, SMS and phone, with carrier choice and contact center integrations. It lists SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR and HIPAA and promises no training on customer data. It does not publish prices.

Who should pick which:

  • Small business, website or WhatsApp bot, known budget: Botpress.
  • Support team that needs chat plus phone: Voiceflow.
  • Developer who wants code and APIs: Botpress.
  • Healthcare or other regulated support: Voiceflow.
  • Agency with many client bots: Voiceflow for white label workspaces, Botpress if price matters most.

Cost at three volumes on Botpress

  • 200 conversations a month. Free covers 100, so you need Plus at $150 a month billed annually ($1,800 a year).
  • 600 conversations a month. Plus at $150 plus about 4 packs at $65 is roughly $410 a month.
  • 2,000 conversations a month. Team at $750 plus 5 packs at $50 is about $1,000 a month, or $0.50 per conversation.

Above roughly 1,200 conversations a month, Team becomes cheaper than Plus with packs.

Getting a Voiceflow number

Voiceflow shows prices inside the app under Plans and Billing. Ask for the monthly fee for Pro and Business, credits included, credits per AI response and per phone minute, editor seat price, and phone number add-on price. Without those, any Voiceflow cost figure on a third party site is a guess. For published per unit rates across vendors, see the AI Price Index.

Pricing winner: Botpress. It is the only one of the two you can budget without a sales call.

Builder. Both mix fixed logic with LLM driven steps. Botpress's Autonomous Node sits inside a workflow; Voiceflow's Playbooks capture how your team handles a case. Voiceflow adds more support specific tooling around measurement: transcripts, split testing and Atlas.

Channels. Botpress covers more messaging apps out of the box. Voiceflow covers the phone, which Botpress reserves for Enterprise.

Developers. Botpress's ADK is a full code first framework with testing. Voiceflow offers an API, a CLI and custom code functions, which is enough to extend an agent but less of a coding environment.

Head to head scenarios

A small business adding a website and WhatsApp chatbot

Winner: Botpress. Free covers 100 conversations a month with Webchat and WhatsApp included, and Plus is a known $150 a month billed annually when you outgrow it. Voiceflow's Free plan has a one time credit grant, and paid prices need a quote.

A support team that needs the same agent on chat and phone

Winner: Voiceflow. It deploys one agent across web, WhatsApp, SMS and inbound and outbound calls, with your choice of Voiceflow numbers, Twilio, Vonage or Telnyx. On Botpress, voice requires an Enterprise contract.

A developer building a custom agent with code and tests

Winner: Botpress. The ADK gives a code first workflow for conversations, tools and tests, alongside custom LLM support and a full API. Voiceflow's API and CLI are capable but built to extend a visual agent, not replace it.

A healthcare or financial services support desk

Winner: Voiceflow. It lists HIPAA and ISO 27001 on top of SOC 2 and GDPR, states it does not train on customer data, and configures OpenAI and Anthropic with zero data retention. We did not find HIPAA listed for Botpress. Confirm a signed BAA with Voiceflow before go live.

An agency running bots for many clients

Winner: Voiceflow. The agency path is built for this: multi client workspaces, white labeling and a free trial with usage based billing. Botpress is the cheaper choice if all you need is unlimited bots and whitelabel webchat on Plus, but its 3 seat limit pushes a larger agency to the $750 Team plan.

A team that needs to forecast spend before buying

Winner: Botpress. Every self serve number is public: conversations included, pack prices, AI spend, storage limits and the $40 storage add-on. The one surprise to plan for is that packs add themselves at 95% of quota and cannot be switched off.

Privacy winner: Voiceflow. It publishes more detail and lists more frameworks.

Verdict

Botpress wins for most small teams and developers: it is the only one with a free plan you can grow on, published per conversation rates and a code first kit, and it covers more messaging apps. Choose it for website, WhatsApp and Messenger agents where budget certainty matters.

Voiceflow wins for support operations that need chat and phone from one agent, carrier choice and a stronger security sheet with HIPAA and ISO 27001. Choose it if you can accept a sales led price and a planned rollout.

Frequently asked questions

Is Botpress better than Voiceflow?

Botpress is better if you want published prices, a free plan with 100 conversations a month and a code first developer kit for chat agents. Voiceflow is better if your agent must answer phone calls as well as chat, or you need HIPAA and ISO 27001 listed.

Which is cheaper, Botpress or Voiceflow?

Botpress is the only one with a public price: $150 a month billed annually for 250 conversations, then $0.65 per extra conversation, or $750 for 1,500 on Team. Voiceflow shows prices only inside its app or on a demo, so you cannot compare until you get a quote.

Can Botpress make phone calls?

Only on Enterprise. The voice channel is not included on Free, Plus or Team, and Botpress counts 3 minutes of voice as one conversation. Voiceflow handles inbound and outbound calls with its own numbers or Twilio, Vonage and Telnyx.

Which is better for agencies?

Voiceflow, narrowly. It has a dedicated agency path with multi client workspaces, white labeling and a free trial with usage based billing. Botpress is the budget option: unlimited agents and whitelabel webchat on Plus, but only 3 seats until you move to Team.

Which is easier for beginners?

Botpress is easier to start because you can sign up free and build without talking to sales. Voiceflow's builder is designed for support teams and its agency trial needs no card, but business buyers are steered to a demo and rollouts are planned in weeks.

Do Botpress or Voiceflow train AI on my data?

Voiceflow says it does not use customer data to train any models and configures OpenAI and Anthropic with zero data retention. Botpress lists SOC 2, GDPR and KPMG penetration testing, but the pages we opened do not state a training policy.

Can I self host Botpress or Voiceflow?

No for both current platforms. Botpress self hosting applies only to its older open source v12 release, and Voiceflow is cloud only, with private cloud hosting on Enterprise.
