What a billable call means
On AI plans every call the AI answers counts, whatever its length. A 30 second hours question and an 8 minute intake both cost one call. Three things do not count: calls from known spam numbers (Smith.ai screens against 20 million+), calls you remove under the allowance of up to 10% of calls per billing cycle, and escalations the AI starts itself, which carry no fee. Escalation to a live receptionist that you configure is a per call add on not priced on the AI page.
Per call billing favors long calls. If your average call runs 4 minutes, $2.00 per call is $0.50 a minute, close to per minute tools such as RingCentral's AI Receptionist. If your calls average 1 minute, it is $2.00 a minute, several times what Rosie or Dialzara charge.

At 200 calls, Pro 300 at $500 costs more than Pro 150 with overage, so stay on Pro 150 until you pass about 250 calls. At 1,000 calls, the custom Enterprise quote should beat $1,850. Plug your own volume and call length into the calculator.
Hidden costs to plan for
- Live escalation. Human backup on AI plans is a per call add on with no listed price.
- Live plan add ons. On human plans, booking is $1.50 a call, recording $0.25, Spanish $1.00, payments $1.00, complex routing $1.50, notifications $0.50 and each extra CRM $0.50. A booked Spanish call with recording adds $2.75 to the base rate.
- Monthly add ons on live plans. Business caller ID $10, extra transfer destinations $15 each, tracking numbers $5.
- Six month plans. Smith.ai offers term plans at better rates. Its replies on Trustpilot say term plans are non refundable, and one reviewer describes paying $2,500 upfront for a six month plan. Start monthly.
- Free plan overage. $3.00 per call is the highest AI overage rate on the page. At 60 calls, Free costs $105, so move to Pro 75 at about 67 calls.
