Best AI Receptionists for Law Firms of 2026
Eight AI and hybrid receptionists ranked for legal intake: practice management links, human backup, after hours coverage and what 100 or 400 calls a month really costs.
By , research by the BestBots team ยท Updated Oct 19, 2026
Fact checked against each company's published pricing, documentation and verified user ratings. How we score
Smith.ai is the best AI receptionist for most law firms: it bills per call, so long intake calls do not run up a meter, it links natively to Clio, and it hands a call to a live receptionist when the AI should not handle it. Posh is the best alternative for firms that want AI and live minutes on one month to month plan.
Our top picks
We compared eight AI and hybrid receptionists on what their pricing pages, integration pages and review listings say as of October 2026. Scores follow our published rubric.
How to choose
Every missed intake call can go to the next firm on Google. Judge each tool on these points:
- Billing unit vs call length. Intake calls run long, often 5 minutes or more. Per call billing (Smith.ai, Upfirst) wins over per minute billing (Posh, Ruby, Dialzara) once calls get long.
- Practice management link. If intake lands in Clio, Lawmatics, Filevine or MyCase, check the native list. Retyping a message into a matter is where leads get lost.
- Human backup. Criminal, family and personal injury callers are often upset. Smith.ai, Posh, Ruby and Abby Connect have people behind the AI.
- Scripted limits. The AI collects facts and books consults. It never advises.
- Languages. Spanish is on every plan at Smith.ai, Abby Connect and Dialzara; Posh offers bilingual receptionists; Upfirst lists 35+ languages; at Ruby, Spanish is an add on.

Legal intake and conflict checks
Give the AI a short, fixed intake script: caller name, phone and email, practice area, key dates (arrest date, accident date, hearing date), the opposing party and anyone else involved, and how they found you. Collecting the opposing party early matters, because your team should run a conflict check before an attorney hears the details of a matter.
Two hard rules belong in every legal script. First, the AI must not give legal advice, predict outcomes or say whether the caller has a case. Second, it must not promise representation or quote a fee as final. A good closing line is a booked consult or a callback from a named person by a stated time. Collect enough to route and check conflicts, not the whole story in a third party transcript.
Practice management integrations
Here is what each record lists for legal software, by name:
| Tool | Legal software listed |
|---|---|
| Smith.ai | Clio Grow, Clio Manage |
| Posh | Clio Grow, Clio Manage, Rocket Matter |
| Ruby | Clio, Lawmatics, Law Ruler, Filevine, MyCase, Rocket Matter |
| Upfirst | Clio (booking) |
| Abby Connect | None named; Salesforce, HubSpot, 1,000+ others |
| Dialpad | Legal intake setup; CRM via Dialpad Pro |
| Nextiva XBert | None named |
| Dialzara | Names not published |
Only Ruby names Filevine, MyCase or Lawmatics. Everyone else needs Zapier or a manual handoff, fine at 50 calls a month and painful at 400.
After hours calls for criminal, family and PI firms
Criminal defense gets 2 a.m. calls after an arrest, family law gets Sunday night calls, PI gets calls from the crash scene. These calls convert, and they rarely come during office hours.
Set the after hours flow by practice area. For criminal defense, decide in advance whether an attorney takes overnight calls; if yes, the AI should collect the name, the facility and the charge if known, and transfer or text the on call attorney. For PI, the AI books a consult and captures the accident date and injuries in plain terms. For family law, if the caller mentions immediate danger, the script should tell them to call 911 and then take a message; the AI does not assess safety.
Pure AI tools (Upfirst, Nextiva, Dialzara, Dialpad) transfer to your own phones. If no one is on call, a hybrid with live people overnight, such as Smith.ai, Posh, Ruby or Abby Connect, is the safer setup.
Confidentiality and call recording consent
Every tool here records, transcribes or summarizes calls in some form. Federal law (18 U.S.C. 2511) allows recording when one party consents, but several states require every party to consent. Add a line to the greeting, such as "this call may be recorded," and check your state bar's guidance on client communications.
Then get the vendor's answers on storage, access, model training and deletion in writing (see the FAQ below). They are your evidence of diligence.
What it costs
Two volumes: a solo firm taking 100 calls a month at 5 minutes (500 minutes), and a 5 attorney firm taking 400 calls (2,000 minutes). Each cell is the cheapest published plan on monthly billing that covers the volume, with overage at the listed rate. Posh is priced as all AI minutes.
| Tool | Solo: 100 calls, 500 min | 5 attorneys: 400 calls, 2,000 min |
|---|---|---|
| Upfirst | $69.95 | $234.95 |
| Nextiva XBert | $99 | $396 |
| Dialzara | $199 | $699 |
| Smith.ai | $212.50 | $717 |
| Posh | about $625 | about $2,267 |
| Abby Connect | about $749 | about $2,760 |
| Ruby (live only) | $1,725 | Quote (above 500 minute plan) |
| Dialpad | Quote only | Quote only |
The math:
- Upfirst: Premium $59.95 for 90 calls plus 10 at $1.00. At 400 calls, Pro $159.95 plus 100 at $0.75.
- Nextiva: $99 for 100 interactions, then 300 at $0.99.
- Dialzara: Plus $199 for 500 minutes. At 2,000, Elite $349 plus 1,000 at $0.35.
- Smith.ai: Pro 75 at $150 plus 25 calls at $2.50. At 400, Pro 300 at $500 plus 100 at $2.17.
- Posh: its small plans plus AI overage come out lowest: Vogue AI $130 plus 450 AI minutes at $1.10, and Elegant AI $215 plus 1,900 at $1.08.
- Abby Connect: Professional (400 AI minutes, $599) plus 100 AI minutes at the plan rate; at 2,000, Growth ($1,380 for 1,000 AI minutes) plus 1,000 at the plan rate.
- Ruby: the 500 minute plan; overage is not published.
A full time receptionist at the BLS median of $18.27 an hour costs about $3,167 a month in wages for 40 hours a week. Every published option above except Ruby costs less at the 5 attorney volume. Run your own numbers in the cost calculator, track rate changes in the AI Price Index, and see the full breakdown in AI receptionist cost.
Red flags
- Any script that answers "do I have a case?" That is legal advice. The AI books a consult instead.
- Per minute plans on long intake calls. A 7 minute intake on Posh costs about $7.70 in AI minutes; on Smith.ai it is one call.
- No native link to your practice software. Retyped intake notes get lost. Check the table above.
- Unpublished overage. Ruby does not list it. Ask before you sign.
- Recording without a greeting disclosure in an all party consent state.
- Long term plans sold as monthly. Confirm the term; some Smith.ai reviewers describe refund disputes.
How we picked
We used published facts only: pricing pages, integration pages and review listings, as of October 2026. We did not place test calls, so we do not grade voice quality. Factor weights are value 25%, features 25%, trust 20%, ease 15% and integrations 15%, as described on how we score. Order is editorial, set on fit for law firms: per call billing for long intake, native legal software links, human backup and published prices.
Rosie, Goodcall and Sameday AI were left out because their records list no legal software. For a side by side of AI and live answering, see AI receptionist vs answering service.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI receptionist for a law firm?
Smith.ai is the best fit for most firms: per call billing suits long intake calls, it links natively to Clio Grow and Clio Manage, and it escalates to live receptionists. Posh is the best alternative if you want AI and live minutes on one published, month to month plan with Clio or Rocket Matter.
Can an AI receptionist do legal intake?
Yes, for the facts: name, contact details, matter type, dates, opposing party and how the caller heard about you. It should never give legal advice, quote fees as a promise or tell a caller whether they have a case. Script those questions to end in a callback from an attorney or paralegal.
Does an AI receptionist integrate with Clio?
Smith.ai (Clio Grow and Clio Manage), Posh (Clio Grow, Clio Manage) and Ruby (Clio) list native Clio links, and Upfirst books into Clio. Ruby also lists Lawmatics, Law Ruler, Filevine, MyCase and Rocket Matter, and Posh lists Rocket Matter.
How much does an AI answering service for lawyers cost?
For 100 calls at 5 minutes a month, published plans run from $69.95 (Upfirst) to about $625 (Posh, all AI) and $1,725 for live only answering at Ruby. Dialpad is quote only. See the table above for a 400 call firm.
Is an AI receptionist confidential enough for a law firm?
It can be, if you control what it collects and where it goes. Ask each vendor where recordings and transcripts are stored, who can access them, whether call data trains its models and how you delete it. None of the records here publishes a legal specific confidentiality term, so get answers in writing.
Can the AI run a conflict check?
Not on its own in any record here. What it can do is collect the opposing party and related names during intake and push them into your practice management system, where your team runs the check before anyone discusses the matter.
